Set 1: Vietnam 25-21 Indonesia
An excellent set by the Vietnamese players. We quickly took the lead after effectively blocking the key attacker Boy Arnez Arabi and gradually extended the lead thanks to the outstanding performance of outside hitter Phạm Quốc Dư.
At one point, the gap narrowed to just 2 points, but Coach Trần Đình Tiền's team avoided mistakes like in the match against Thailand. Vietnam won 25-21 and took a 1-0 lead.
Boy Arnez and Rivan Nurmulki – two Indonesian stars – underperformed, which was very advantageous for us.
Set 2: Vietnam 25-20 Indonesia
It's unclear what happened to Indonesia; the defending champions completely lost their cohesion, and main attacker Boy Arnez disappeared in set 2. Meanwhile, Vietnam played increasingly well, with not only Quốc Dư but also Văn Tiên, Duy Tuyến, and Thế Khải performing excellently, creating a safe lead.
Libero Cao Đức Hoàng also had a standout day, defending strongly against efforts from Rivan and Susanto. Vietnam was just one set away from the gold medal.
Set 3: Vietnam 22-25 Indonesia
Vietnam continued to play well in set 3, taking the lead and battling closely with the defending champions for most of the set. Simply put, Indonesia was more focused and organized their blocks much better.
Although this was not Indonesia's best set and Rivan Nurmulki was less effective, at least Indonesian fans could be somewhat reassured as Boy Arnez Arabi regained his best form. The score tightened to 1-2, and the chance to defend the gold medal was still alive for Rivan and his teammates.
Set 4: Vietnam 19-25 Indonesia
Vietnam started the set well again, leading by 4 points. However, when Ngọc Thuân and Quốc Dư tired, we could no longer maintain control, allowing Indonesia to score 5 consecutive points and take the lead.
The brilliance of Rivan, Boy Arnez, and especially middle blocker Kurniawan helped the defending champions extend their lead, leveling the score 2-2 and pushing the SEA Games 33 semifinal to a decisive fifth set.
Set 5: Vietnam 10-15 Indonesia
Vietnam started well again at the beginning of the set, but our defense quickly collapsed under heavy pressure from defending champions Indonesia. Boy Arnez Arabi proved why he is the most exciting young outside hitter in Southeast Asia with his impressive jump and sharp wrist action.
Indonesia surged to the finish line and reached the SEA Games final for the fourth consecutive time.
Final result, Indonesia defeated Vietnam 3-2 (21-25; 20-25; 25-22; 25-19; 15-10). Coach Trần Đình Tiền’s team will compete for the bronze medal against the host nation Thailand or the Philippines at 3:00 PM tomorrow, December 19.
