Outstanding and balanced scoring ability across positions helped the Vietnamese women's volleyball team achieve success at the SEA Games.
The women's indoor volleyball event at SEA Games 33 concluded with the host Thailand winning the gold medal after an incredibly dramatic victory over Vietnam on the evening of December 15.
Although they could not change the medal color or make history at the SEA Games, the performance of the Vietnamese women's volleyball team this year was highly commendable. Tran Thi Thanh Thuy and her teammates completely dominated other regional opponents and for the first time pushed Thailand into a decisive 5th set (within SEA Games context). With a bit more precision and luck, the prestigious gold medal would have belonged to coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet's team.
The Vietnamese team delivered a convincing style of play, strong defense, effective offense, and did not rely solely on star player Tran Thi Thanh Thuy. This is clearly reflected by Vietnam contributing 4 players in the top 10 scorers at SEA Games 33 (according to Volleytrails statistics).
Thanh Thuy remains the brightest star in Vietnam’s offense, ranking 3rd on the list with 54 points from just 3 matches. Right after "4T" is Vi Thi Nhu Quynh with 53 points, middle blocker Tran Thi Bich Thuy scored 45 points - ranking 6th, and outside hitter Hoang Thi Kieu Trinh placed 8th with 41 points.
Leading the scoring chart at SEA Games 33 is Indonesia’s number 1 star - Megawati Hangestri Pertiwi with 69 points. The defending champion Thailand’s representative Sasipapron Janthasiwut follows closely with 4 points less.
