This is the inaugural international experience for the 1.95m tall spiker.
Middle blocker Lý Thị Luyến made her debut with her new club Hobby Ace — a team competing in the Mongolian National Volleyball Championship — on November 5th.
Lý Luyến was immediately given a chance to play and showcased her skills, especially her blocking ability, leveraging her impressive height of 1.95m. However, her debut was bittersweet as her team narrowly lost 2-3 to Khilchin.
Born in 2000, Lý Thị Luyến is currently the tallest female volleyball middle blocker in Vietnam. She was once called up to the national team but has not been selected in the past two years.
The 25-year-old attacker has an ideal height for the middle blocker position, providing a strong advantage in blocking. Nevertheless, her blocking coordination, anticipation, and quick attacks at the net still have some limitations.
Hobby Ace is Lý Thị Luyến’s first foreign club. The middle blocker from HCĐG Lào Cai previously attended a try-out for the Korean National Volleyball Championship with teammates Trần Tú Linh and Trần Thị Bích Thủy early last year, but none were accepted. Later, Bích Thủy got an opportunity when the Asian foreign player of GS Caltex Seoul Kixx suffered a season-long injury, and the rest became history.
Hobby Ace has been a strong team in recent years, finishing as runners-up three times in 2019-2020, 2020-2021, and 2021-2022 seasons. However, they have not ranked in the top three in the last three seasons.
Lý Thị Luyến is expected to enhance Hobby Ace’s blocking strength with her exceptional height. She is one of two foreign players on the team, alongside Hikaru Tamura from Japan.
