The Vietnam Volleyball Federation aims to implement changes to enhance the appeal of the National Championship from the upcoming season.
Recently, the Vietnam Volleyball Federation (VFV) sent an official letter to teams in the national championship system to gather feedback, aiming to improve and elevate the quality of the tournament starting from the 2026 season.
The VFV’s feedback form includes two main areas: foreign player transfers and competition format. The federation proposed options to increase the number of foreign players from next season: either transfer 2 foreign players and field 2 on court, or transfer 3 foreign players but still field only 2 on court.
Currently, the National Volleyball Championship allows clubs to hire 2 foreign players but only permits 1 foreign player on the court at a time. Increasing the number of foreign players would attract top hitters, contributing to raising the tournament’s quality. However, some opinions suggest that relying too much on foreign players could weaken the abilities of domestic athletes.
Regarding the competition format, VFV proposed two options: home-and-away matches or centralized tournaments (either 2 phases as currently, or 3 or 4 phases). Most major international leagues use the home-and-away format, which boosts professionalism and gives players more playing opportunities; however, this requires higher costs and participating teams must have adequate facilities.
Last year, VFV proposed changing the National Volleyball Championship format to a home-and-away system spanning from the latter half of one year to the middle of the next. However, this plan did not gain much consensus due to cost concerns.
