Four Vietnamese female volleyball players have been recognized as 'stars' by the FIVB homepage ahead of their match against Poland.

The official website of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has listed the teams participating in the 2025 World Championship, including Vietnam, and has named four of our players as "stars."

Four Vietnamese female volleyball players have been recognized as "stars" by the FIVB homepage.

The 2025 Women's Volleyball World Championship will be held from August 22 to September 7 in Thailand. This is the first time the tournament uses a new format, switching to a biennial cycle instead of every four years. At the same time, the number of participating teams has been expanded to 32 national teams, providing opportunities for many emerging volleyball nations to join and develop further.

According to the format, 32 teams will be divided into 8 groups of 4 teams each. Teams will face each other once in a round-robin during the group stage. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the knockout rounds. The Vietnamese women's volleyball team is placed in Group G along with Poland, Germany, and Kenya. Let’s review the teams in this group.

Poland

Poland is the highest-ranked team to qualify through the ranking system and is the top favorite in Group G, currently ranked third in the world. They have participated 11 times and finished as runners-up in the inaugural World Championship in 1952. Additionally, Poland earned two bronze medals in 1956 and 1962. In the last three seasons, Poland has won bronze at the Nations League each time. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, they finished in sixth place.

Twelve of the fourteen players who competed in the VNL finals in Gdansk last month have been called up again by Italian coach Stefano Lavarini for the Thailand tournament. Notable players include captain and middle blocker Agnieszka Korneluk, as well as attackers Magdalena Stysiak, Martyna Lukasik, and Malwina Smarzek.

The Vietnamese women's volleyball team can still earn many points against Poland if they have a strong first step and play cleverly.

Vietnam

Vietnam will make its debut at the World Championship after placing fourth in the 2023 Asian Championship. The team is currently ranked 22nd in the world, just above Kenya. This year, Vietnam successfully defended the AVC Nations Cup title for the third consecutive time. Less than two weeks ago, the team made history by winning gold at the SEA V League.

However, the MVP (Most Valuable Player) of both tournaments — outside hitter Nguyễn Thị Bích Tuyền — will not travel to Phuket. The Vietnamese squad still attracts attention with players from the continental "Dream Team" such as outside hitter Trần Thị Thanh Thúy, Vi Thị Như Quỳnh, middle blocker Trần Thị Bích Thủy, and libero Nguyễn Khánh Đang.

Germany

Germany qualified for the tournament through the FIVB world ranking system and currently holds the 11th position, the second highest among the four teams in Group G. The German women's team has participated 17 times, with their best finish being fourth place achieved by East Germany in 1974 and 1986. Earlier this year, Germany ranked seventh in the Nations League (VNL).

In Thailand, Italian coach Giulio Bregoli leads the team with 25-year-old middle blocker Camilla Weitzel as captain. Other experienced players include libero Anna Pogany, outside hitters Lina Alsmeier, Lena Stigrot, Hanna Orthmann, and middle blocker Marie Scholzel. Unfortunately, Germany will miss setter Pia Kastner and libero Annie Cesar due to injuries.

Kenya

Kenya qualified by winning the 2023 African Championship. They have not played any official ranking matches since the Paris 2024 Olympics and currently rank 23rd in the world. This will be Kenya’s seventh World Championship appearance, with their best result being 13th place in 1994 and 1998.

Arriving in Phuket, coach Geoffrey Omondi Onyango leads a team captained by 28-year-old outside hitter Meldinah Nemali Sande. The Kenyan roster also features six players who participated in last year’s Olympics in France, including setter Emmaculate Nekesa Misoki, opposite hitter Pamella Adhiambo, outside hitters Juliana Namutira and Veronica Adhiambo, along with middle blockers Belinda Barasa and Lorine Chebet.
