Following Bich Tuyen's departure, coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet introduced a new approach for the Vietnam women's volleyball team at the 2025 World Championship.
With the unexpected exit of opposite hitter Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen right before the 2025 Women's Volleyball World Championship, the Vietnam team was forced to seek new personnel solutions.
Instead of selecting Hoang Thi Kieu Trinh—who was considered the most logical replacement—coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet surprised many by assigning Vi Thi Nhu Quynh to play as the opposite hitter in the friendly match where Vietnam beat Kenya 4-0 at Dong Anh Stadium. This bold move is seen as both daring and a potential new direction for the team.
Although not yet accustomed to the opposite hitter role, Nhu Quynh delivered an impressive performance against the African opponents. Coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet noted that the team's current outside hitters are versatile and can adapt to different tactical needs.
He also pointed out that during 2022 and 2023, when Bich Tuyen was absent, the Vietnamese team still achieved great results thanks to their collective flexibility and adaptable playing style.
At 23, Vi Thi Nhu Quynh is regarded as one of Vietnam volleyball's most promising attackers. While she may not have the sheer power of Bich Tuyen, she excels in finesse, agility, and a fiery competitive spirit.
During the 2025 SEA V.League, Nhu Quynh made a significant impact by coming off the bench in the final against Thailand, sparking a dramatic comeback that led Vietnam to a stunning 3-2 victory. Her outstanding play not only secured a historic win over one of the region’s strongest teams but also earned her the “Best Outside Hitter” award.
It was her composure and performance in critical moments that encouraged coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet to experiment with Nhu Quynh in a new position. The recent win over Kenya served as an important test, and the 2002-born player proved she is capable of handling the role considered the team's "number one attacking spearhead."
If she maintains this level of performance, she could very well become the ideal replacement for the gap left by Bich Tuyen.
The 2025 Women's Volleyball World Championship in Thailand will take place from August 22 to September 7, featuring the world's top 32 teams.
