The announcement came as a surprise, as Terence Atmane, the French semifinalist at the Cincinnati Open, revealed on social media that he would not compete in the US Open qualifiers due to a foot injury, a development that sparked widespread interest.
On Instagram, Atmane shared more about his injury: “Hello everyone. After undergoing an MRI in New York yesterday, it was found that I have a moderate partial tear of the first metatarsophalangeal joint, a grade two injury to the medial head of the flexor hallucis brevis, and a mild partial tear of the medial sesamoid ligament. In other words, I won’t be able to play at the US Open…”
Atmane expressed his disappointment about missing the US Open:
“I’m really sorry about this, because after my recent results, I hoped to go even further, but for my team and myself, the wise choice is to recover and prepare for the Asian swing. This is the best decision.”
It’s worth noting that Atmane’s performance at the Cincinnati Open was outstanding. Entering the qualifiers ranked only 136th in the PIF ATP rankings, he rose to 69th by the end of the tournament. The left-handed player claimed five of his ten career tour-level wins at this event.
His dream run in Cincinnati ended on Saturday, when he faced world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in a fierce semifinal. Sinner prevailed 7-6(4), 6-2.
Despite missing out on the US Open, Atmane remains positive. He disclosed on social media that he now plans to compete at the upcoming Chengdu Open in China.
