On August 11, 2025, ATP Tour columnist Peter Staples reported that Australian coach Darren Cahill discussed the key factors behind his pupil Jannik Sinner reaching the PIF ATP ranking of world number one at the Cincinnati Open. Since starting their collaboration in July 2022, Cahill has witnessed the continuous rise of this Italian player.
Achieving the world number one ranking in ATP is not an overnight success. Currently, Sinner has held the pinnacle of tennis for 14 consecutive months. His success is attributed to his relentless effort and ambition, as well as the support of his coaching team—Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi joined his team within the first half of 2022. Sinner disbanded his previous team centered around coach Piatti after the 2021 year-end finals.
Since the formation of the new coaching team, Sinner's performance has skyrocketed, having won 4 Grand Slam titles, the ATP Finals, and 4 ATP Masters 1000 titles. Moreover, the bigger the stage, the more explosive his performances seem to be. Cahill expressed pride in this: “All the efforts made over the past three years have finally manifested in major tournaments, allowing him to navigate through challenges and secure victories. These significant changes are not achieved in four or five days, but are the result of daily encouragement and ensuring we consistently work on these aspects over one or two years.”
Cahill also mentioned that when he first started working with Sinner in July 2022, serving was prioritized as a key area for improvement.
“I said at the time, ‘You are 6 feet 4 inches tall, strong, and need to serve faster with better placement. This way, not only can you win some easy points off your first serve, but your first shot after serving will also be more effective. If your opponent can easily handle your serve, you will have to work much harder to score.’”
Sinner's ongoing process of improving his shortcomings exemplifies his desire to compete, which Cahill refers to as a “competitive beast.”
Currently, Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are performing at the top level, with their achievements over the past few years allowing them to stand out among many players. Cahill believes it now depends on whether other players can catch up to them.
Sinner currently has a record of 27 wins and 3 losses this season. The three losses were against Alcaraz in the Rome Masters and French Open finals, and against Bublik in the Halle Open.
The Cincinnati Masters is the sixth tournament Sinner has participated in this season. A three-month suspension period caused him to miss some events, such as the North American Sunshine Double. He currently has 6050 points in the standings for the Turin event, trailing Alcaraz by 1540 points, ranking second. He has now become the second player, after Alcaraz, to secure qualification for the 2025 Turin year-end finals. The two are currently engaged in a final showdown for the year-end world number one title for the 2025 season.
Sinner will face Canadian player Gabriel Diallo in the fourth round of the Cincinnati Open on Monday.
