As the final major mixed-gender event before the official start of the US Open this year, the championship battle in Cincinnati has drawn significant attention from fans. Several players from mainland China have participated in the main draw and achieved some victories; let’s take a look at their performances.
As a rising star, Wang Xinyu eliminated Alango in the first round of Cincinnati with a score of 7-6, 6-3; however, the unfortunate draw led her to face the tournament's second seed, Gauff, in the second round. Although they had met earlier in Berlin this season, where Wang Xinyu emerged victorious, Gauff's strength as a high-seeded local player should not be underestimated.
Ultimately, Wang Xinyu lost to her opponent with a score of 3-6, 2-6, missing out on the third round. The former tournament champion successfully avenged her defeat from this year's Berlin event. According to the draw, she will face Yastremska in the next round, with both players having won one match each in their two encounters this season.
For Wang Xinyu, her early exit in Cincinnati also means she is unlikely to secure a seed position for this year's US Open. In this tournament, she only earned 35 points along with $18,000 in prize money, currently ranking 36th in the world.
Following Wang Xinyu's exit, the only remaining player from China in the singles draw is lucky loser Yuan Yue, who surprisingly advanced to the top 32 by defeating Buchsah and the tournament's 14th seed, Schneider, in the first two rounds.
Yuan Yue, who has now returned to the top 100 in the rankings, will compete against Kostyuk for a spot in the women's singles round of 16 early tomorrow morning Beijing time. Currently, Kostyuk is ranked 136th in the world, and this will be their first career meeting; we hope Yuan Yue can continue her good fortune.
Although Yuan Yue is the only remaining player in singles, several Chinese female players are still competing in the women's doubles at this year's Cincinnati event. However, in the matches that have concluded so far, none of the Chinese players have managed to secure victories.
The women’s doubles third seeds, Zhang Shuai and Townsend, lost in the first round to the strong pair of Melichar/Samsonova with a score of 3-6, 5-7, missing out on advancing to the next round. Nevertheless, Zhang Shuai has had a satisfactory performance during this year’s North American summer hard court season, winning the championship with Townsend in Washington and reaching the finals (runner-up) in Montreal.
Next, she will partner with Aleksandrova to compete in the US Open. As last year's women’s doubles runner-up, Zhang Shuai faces considerable pressure to defend her points.
Also eliminated were the tournament’s eighth seeds, Jiang Xinyu/Zhan Haoqing, who were defeated in straight sets by Aoyama/Bookshah, missing out on the next round. Thus, the women’s doubles draw only has Guo Hanyu/Panova and Xu Yifan/Yang Zhaoxuan remaining, both of whom have yet to play their first round.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Barbie)
