Spanish star Paula Badosa officially announced her withdrawal from the 2025 US Open on social media, marking her fourth consecutive withdrawal from North American hard court events after Washington, Montreal, and Cincinnati. Her withdrawal not only affects her ranking but also disrupts British rising star Jack Draper's mixed doubles plans at the US Open. Previously, Draper was set to partner with Zheng Qinwen, but after Zheng's withdrawal, he had to switch to Badosa. However, the consecutive withdrawals of both Zheng and Badosa have derailed this plan.
In her withdrawal statement, Badosa expressed her sadness about the US Open: “With a heavy heart, I must announce my withdrawal from this year's US Open. This decision was incredibly difficult. Reflecting on my journey last year and the emotional connection I built with the fans and this city, withdrawing from this event is especially heartbreaking. The US Open has always been significant to me, where I created unique memories. Thank you to everyone for your support. Now I must focus on my health and recovery in hopes of returning to the court even stronger.”
Badosa had a fruitful North American hard court season last year, winning her fourth career title in Washington; reaching the semifinals in Cincinnati by defeating players like Kaja Juvan and Pavlyuchenkova; and achieving the milestone of reaching the second week of all four Grand Slam tournaments, ultimately making it to the quarterfinals. However, this year, due to injury issues, she missed Washington, Montreal, Cincinnati, and the US Open, resulting in a total loss of 1385 points. This drop caused her world ranking to fall from the Top 10 earlier this year to currently 12th, and her ranking will continue to decline with her US Open withdrawal.
Badosa had a bright start to the season, reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open, where she defeated third seed Coco Gauff in the quarterfinals, marking her first victory over a top ten player in a Grand Slam. After the Australian Open, she returned to the top ten. However, ongoing injury issues have hampered her performance during the clay and grass seasons, leading her to miss Indian Wells, Madrid, and Rome, with a mid-tournament withdrawal in Miami as well. Now, she has missed the entire North American hard court season. Her withdrawal has also altered the competitive landscape of the US Open, reducing the number of strong contenders like Sabalenka, Swiatek, Gauff, and Rybakina.
For Badosa, the most important thing right now is to fully recover from her injuries and avoid the consequences of competing while injured. In her statement, she emphasized her desire to return with a “stronger presence,” and fans are hopeful that this former world number two can recover soon and rejoin the top tier of competition.
