Toronto Update 8.4: Fokina withdraws, Rublev advances, Fritz wins in a thrilling three tiebreaks match.

The fourth round of the Toronto Masters has concluded. The four players advancing to the quarterfinals from the lower half are Fritz, Rublev, Shelton, and De Minaur. It's worth mentioning that the matches in the lower half were significantly more thrilling than those in the upper half.

The 9th seed De Minaurdefeated the 7th seed Tiafoe with a score of 6-2/4-7/6-4, advancing to the quarterfinals. This is his eighth consecutive victory in the North American hard court season. Last week, he won the Washington 500 tournament. This week, his ATP ranking returns to the TOP 10, placing him in eighth position.

The 6th seed Rublevwas in a decisive match against Fokina, who withdrew. The score was 6-7 (3)/7-6 (2)/3-0. Fokina reached the finals in Washington last week.

The 4th seed Sheltonfaced off against fellow On Running player Kovalik in a fierce competition, ultimately defeating Kovalik with a score of 6-4/4-6/7-6 (1) to advance to the quarterfinals. Kovalik led 5-4 in the final set but was broken while serving for the match, bringing the score to 5-5. This became the turning point of the match. In the tiebreak, Shelton's mental toughness prevailed, and he played steadily, winning decisively with a score of 7-1.

Currently, there aren't many players representing On Running in tennis. On the ATP side, there are Shelton, Kovalik, Fonseca, and doubles player Reda Bennani. On the WTA side, there's Swiatek.

In the final match, the top seed Fritzbattled Czech player Lehecka in three sets, with each set going to a tiebreak, creating a thrilling atmosphere. Ultimately, the scales of victory tilted slightly in favor of Fritz, with final scores of 7-6 (4)/6-7 (5)/7-6 (5).

Throughout the match, there were no breaks of serve; Lehecka saved all 5 break points, while Fritz saved all 9 break points. The total points scored were 128 to 130, with Lehecka narrowly losing by two points.

All four matches in the fourth round of the lower half went to three sets, totaling 12 sets, with 6 of those being tiebreaks. This illustrates the intensity of the competition.
