Who is the player with the most Grand Slam titles in tennis history?

Winning a Grand Slam title is something that most tennis players dream of from the day they start swinging their rackets. Despite the extreme difficulty of winning a Grand Slam event, over the years, a handful of players have dominated this biggest stage. Especially in the last two decades, some players have established themselves in history by winning a record number of Grand Slam titles.

In 2025, the battle for these records continues as the French Open enters a critical phase.

In order of event, the four major tournaments held each year are:

- Australian Open, held on hard courts. Founded in 1905.

- French Open, on clay, was born in 1891 at the French Open.

- Wimbledon Tennis Championships, held on grass courts. Wimbledon is the oldest Grand Slam tournament and was founded in 1877.

- U.S. Open, held on hard courts, was founded in 1881, second only to Wimbledon.

Who has won the most Grand Slam titles?

Novak DjokovicandMargaret CourtTogether, they hold the record for the number of Grand Slam singles titles, with both winning 24 titles.

At the 2023 French Open, Nadal retired due to injury, and Djokovic won his third French Open title, thus dominating the men's tennis world.

Nadal won the Australian Open 2022 title, surpassing Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic to take the top spot in the men's singles record with 21 Grand Slams. He then extended his lead at that year's French Open, until Djokovic closed the gap to one at Wimbledon.

(I have always felt that 2022 was a very critical juncture, when the Big Three all won 20 Grand Slams, and it was also the first time that Djokovic equaled Fener's Grand Slam record.) Perhaps, this is the real reason why Djokovic was forcibly deported from the country in the name of "something" after he had obtained the Australian Open vaccine exemption and came to Australia! )

In the final of the 2023 Australian Open, Djokovic defeated Tsitsipas to tie the men's championship with Nadal for the top spot. In the Wimbledon final of the same year, he lost to Alcaraz in five sets, and then defeated Medvedev in straight sets at the US Open. That means he won his third major title in 2023, equalling Court's iconic record of 24 Grand Slam titles.

(If Djokovic hadn't bounced back strongly in 2023, the ATP would not have had a record of 24 Grand Slam titles, and the GOAT battle could have ended with Nadal's 22 titles.) )

Switzerland's Federer announced his retirement after the Laver Cup in September 2022 and will not add to the number of Grand Slam titles. His last Grand Slam title was won at the 2018 Australian Open.

Nadal retired after the Davis Cup in November 2024, and the possibility of him catching up with Djokovic again is no longer in doubt.

In the WTA, Serena Williams was expected to catch up with Court, but the American also left tennis after failing to win any of her last four Grand Slam finals.
