ATP 's-Hertogenbosch: Medvedev made his grass-court debut

In the second round of the ATP 250 's-Hertogenbosch on Thursday, top seed Dmitry Medvedev narrowly beat Mannarino 7-6(6), 6-4, and saved two set points in the first tie-break to save two set points from 4/6 down to complete the comeback.

This is the fourth time the two have met in the event (a record match-to-head match) and the ninth time the two sides have faced each other. Medvedev tied the two at 's-Hertogenbosch to a 2-2 draw and take a 5-4 lead overall. Five of those bouts took place on grass, including Mannarino's five-set victory at Wimbledon 2018.

"He's perfect on grass and hits the ball very low, which makes it hard for me to penetrate this style of play," Medvedev said, "and I actually caused the same problems for him, so none of us can score a winning point, so we have to play this kind of attrition war." "

This is Medvedev's 82nd career appearance in the quarter-finals of a tour tournament (12th on grass) and will face lucky loser Opelka in the next round. In the duel between the two serving cannons, Opelka eliminated Jarry 7-6(5), 6-3 and blasted 12 aces in the match.

Elsewhere, Berges defeated fourth seed Poppelin 6-7(3)/6-2/7-6(3) to become the first Belgian to reach the quarter-finals of the grass court since Goffin in 2015. This is the seventh time Berges has reached the quarter-finals of a tournament (fourth of the season) and his quarter-final opponent is Estonian qualifier Hayal who has retired from the tournament due to Hurkacz (lower back injury).

No.2 seed Jugo Amber, who retired in the second round of the French Open last month, was in fine form as he beat Evans 7-5, 6-3 in one hour and 41 minutes. The Marseille winner will take on seventh seed Jorges to challenge for his second title of the season.
