Joao Fonseca made a stunning debut at Roland Garros on Tuesday, knocking out 30th seed Hurkacz 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.
The 18-year-old will become the second-youngest winner of a clay Grand Slam in the last 10 years, behind only Alcaraz in 2021 at 18.
Fonseca played confidently on the packed No. 7 court, which fully mobilized the atmosphere of the scene. He left 30th seed Hurkacz at bay, pressing his opponent from the baseline, combining powerful shots with tight consistency. Hurkacz reached the final of the ATP 250 in Geneva last week, losing to Novak Djokovic in a hard-fought battle of three hours and five minutes.
Fonseca summed it up after the game:
"I played well, focused on receiving and serving, and I knew there were going to be a lot of quality serves, so I focused on getting the first shot back and getting the ball back, trying to get it one more time hold, getting the ball back into the middle of the court and being as aggressive as possible. Take advantage of the opportunity to surf the net and stay aggressive at all times. ”
According to Infosys ATP statistics, Fonseca's tour record improved to 11-7 this season. During the Australian Open, he knocked out No. 9 seed Rublev in an upset to win his first Grand Slam main draw. He then won his first career title in Buenos Aires.
With this victory, Fonseca moved to 57th in the ATP rankings. In the next round, he will face the French veteran Herbert, who is 16 years older than him. Herbert is a doubles star and a wild card.
