The Hamburg Open 2025 has a strong line-up, led by Sinner and Musetti

Sinner, Musetti, Rune and Paul lead, with Zverev and Fils absent

The Hamburg Open looks strong with eight of the top 20 players in the ATP rankings after adjusting to the pre-French Open schedule.

The clay ATP 500 event was previously held in July after Wimbledon, but from this year onwards it will take place the week before the French Open.

The Hamburg Open 2025 will take place from May 18 to 24, a week after the Italian Open.

Fils is the defending champion, having beaten Zverev in the 2024 final, but he chose not to defend his title and recuperated before the French Open.

Zverev was perhaps the most notable absentee, as he was Germany's top player. At the French Open, it's time to take a break. There are too many entries.

World No. 1 Sinner is making his comeback in Rome and has added the Hamburg Open to his schedule in hopes of gaining as much experience as possible ahead of the French Open.

Musetti, Rune, Paulo, Tiafoe, Rublev, Cerundolo and Tsitsipas have all registered.

How many players will participate in the main competition?

There will be 32 players in the Hamburg Open singles main draw draw, including four qualifiers and four wild cards (one A+ wild card is reserved for late entrants).

Who gets the wild card?

The wildcard for this year's event has not yet been announced.

In 2024, three wild cards are given to three German players: Maximilian Martler, Rudolf Molek and Henry Squier.

Are any players retiring?

There are currently no retirements from the main draw and qualifiers, but this may change depending on the performance at the Italian Open.

Which former champions will compete?

Musetti and Rublev are the only two former Hamburg champions to compete, having won in 2022 and 2020 respectively.

Do any players use the Protected Rankings to compete?

Players who are unable to participate in any tournament for at least six months due to injury are eligible to use the ATP Protection Ranking System.

The protection ranking will be determined based on the average ranking of the player in the first three months after the injury. They can use the Protected Ranking to play in nine events, which are valid for nine months from the first event they play after their return.

However, no player is currently competing in the Hamburg Open using the Protected Rankings.
