ATP Ranking Battle: Zverev vs Alcaraz

Sunday's two ATP 500 finals saw Zverev beat Ben Shelton in Munich and Rune beat Alcaraz in Barcelona.

In this week's ATP rankings, Zverev overtook Alcaraz to move up to No. 2 in the world, but the race for that ranking has only just begun.

Zverev won the BMW Open, while Alcaraz lost in the final in Barcelona. As a result, Zverev leads Alcaraz by 5 points.

Last week, Alcaraz won the title in Monte Carlo, snatching the world No. 2 spot from Zverev. A week later, their rankings were reversed again. This is likely to happen more than once in the coming weeks.

The second place in the world is ranked second in the fourth ATP Masters tournament of the season -Madrid Openwill again be the target of contention. Zverev needs to keep 100 points in Madrid, while Alcaraz needs to keep 200 points. Every game can be crucial.

Although Alcaraz will have 2,000 points to secure at the French Open at the end of the clay season, Zverev will have more points to deduct from the ranking points for the rest of the fixture. Last year, Zverev won the title in Rome, while Alcaraz did not participate.

By the end of the French Open, Zverev had 2,400 points, while Alcaraz had 2,200.

Rune's impressive performances at Barcelona saw him climb to No. 9 in the PIF ATP Instant Rankings, where he won his first title of the season.

The Dane will return to the top 10 for the first time since the second week of April last year. He has a good chance of moving up the rankings in Madrid, as No. 8 Andrei Rublev is the defending champion of Madrid and will have 1,000 points deducted after the event.
