On Friday, the Miami Open welcomed the biggest stars in the world of football. Argentine legend Lionel Messi took to the sidelines to watch Djokovic and Dimitrov in the semi-final.
Messi led Argentina to World Cup glory and lifted the Champions League four times with Barcelona. He is now the captain of Major League Soccer team Miami International. On Friday afternoon, he came to the stands from the stadium to watch Djokovic's performance at the ATP1000 Masters.
"It's great that he's here," Djokovic said of Messi in his post-match interview.
"It's an honour to play in front of him, probably the first time I've performed for him live. I am really grateful that he is here with his son and family. For most of his career, like most people in the world, I admired him a lot, and it's amazing that he's still going on.
"Actually, we are the same age, we were both born in 1987, so it's really nice to have him here."
For Messi and Djokovic, age is just a number as they keep breaking records. The 35-year-old lifted the World Cup trophy and won the Ballon d'Or for a record eighth time at the age of 36. Meanwhile, the 37-year-old Djokovic became the oldest finalist in the history of the ATP1000 Masters and has reached the final at tour level for 20 consecutive seasons (2006 to 2025).
Heroes cherish heroes.
