Alex Eala honored by Philippine President after Wimbledon 2026 feat

The reigning SEA Games champion showcased an exceptional display at the esteemed grass-court Grand Slam held at the All England Club.

Only one day after returning home from Wimbledon 2026, the top Southeast Asian player - Alexandra Eala was awarded a certificate of commendation by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at Malacanang Palace in recognition of her historic achievement at the prestigious grass-court Grand Slam.

At age 21, Eala became the first Filipino tennis player to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam singles event. This feat helped her set a new milestone for Philippine tennis, while also rising to world No. 28 - the highest ranking of her career.

During the ceremony, President Marcos expressed admiration for the young star and could not hide his excitement at meeting his idol in person. He said he hoped to have the opportunity to watch Eala play, even if not necessarily at a Grand Slam.

In response, Eala affirmed that she would continue to strive to represent the Philippines with all her pride.

"I will always give my best to represent the best of my country both on and off the court. I am truly proud to be Filipino and always carry my country's flag with me everywhere.", the tennis player born in 2005 shared.

The former student of Rafael Nadal also admitted that she rarely gets nervous speaking in front of a crowd, but the meeting at the Presidential Palace was an exception.

"I feel that all the quiet hours of training, the efforts that never appeared on television, have finally been recognized and appreciated.", she said emotionally.

Earlier, Eala was warmly welcomed upon her arrival in Manila, with the presence of leaders from the Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee.

At Wimbledon 2026, Eala's journey ended in the fourth round after a loss to Jasmine Paolini in a three-set match. However, she caused a major upset by eliminating defending champion Iga Swiatek in the third round with a score of 7-6 (9-7), 6-2.

Success at Wimbledon continues the impressive run of results that Eala has built over the past year, following standout performances at the Miami Open and US Open.
