Spanish tennis prodigy retires at age 38

A Spanish tennis player known for his unique approach, unlike his countrymen, has chosen to retire sooner than planned.

The tennis world was taken by surprise when Roberto Bautista Agut officially announced his retirement, despite previously stating he would compete until the end of the 2026 season.

At 38, the former world No. 9 decided to end his career right after participating in the Copa del Rey de Tenis in Huelva. This traditional tournament on home soil became Bautista Agut's final stop, instead of continuing through the season as originally planned.

During a farewell ceremony held in Huelva, Bautista Agut appeared alongside his wife and children before emotionally confirming that this was his last professional match. He later bid farewell to fans on social media.

"The Copa del Rey de Tenis is my last tournament as a professional player. I am very happy to close my journey on my home soil of Spain, at a tournament rich in tradition. I am grateful to everyone who has accompanied me and grateful to tennis for all the wonderful things this sport has brought me.", RBA shared.

Before making his retirement decision, the 1988-born player's last match on the ATP Tour was a loss to Brazilian rising star Joao Fonseca in the first round of Wimbledon 2026. At that time, few thought it would be the last time fans would see Bautista Agut compete in an official tournament.

Roberto Bautista Agut, born in 1988, was one of the world's top tennis players generally, and specifically in Spain, during the period from 2014 to 2023. He won 12 ATP titles, over 500 Tour victories, reached the Wimbledon semifinals, never exited before the fourth round of Grand Slam tournaments, and achieved a career-high ranking of world No. 9 in 2019.

The 2019 season is also considered the peak of RBA's career. He reached the Wimbledon semifinals for the first time and played a major role in helping Spain win the Davis Cup. In the final against Canada, Bautista Agut defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime before Rafael Nadal secured the decisive victory for the home team.

Unlike other Spanish peers—who possess characteristic topspin shots and explosive playing styles, often excelling on clay courts—Roberto Bautista Agut chose a very distinctive path: solid defense, minimizing errors, finding sharp angles, and exploiting opponents' weaknesses with low, fast shots. That is also why his preferred surfaces were grass and indoor hard courts—his serve was not powerful but very tricky.

Another player from the 80s generation leaves the game. Some "veterans" still competing on the Tour (singles only) currently include Novak Djokovic; Stan Wawrinka, Kei Nishikori, Gael Monfils, and Mikhail Kukushkin (all retiring at the end of the 2026 season); Marin Cilic and Adrian Mannarino.
