Djokovic suffers shocking defeat at Roland Garros 2026, makes harsh remarks about Sinner and Alcaraz

For yet another time, Djokovic failed to secure his 25th Grand Slam title following a stunning reverse defeat against Joao Fonseca in the third round at Roland Garros this year.

Novak Djokovic's quest for the 25th Grand Slam title of his career ended in a regrettable manner as the Serbian tennis player suffered a comeback loss to the young talent Joao Fonseca in the third round of Roland Garros 2026 on the evening of May 29, Vietnam time.

Djokovic made a convincing start, winning the first two sets both by a score of 6-4 against the 19-year-old opponent. With the experience and composure of a champion holding 24 Grand Slam titles, the Serbian had little trouble completely dominating the match.

However, Fonseca staged a spectacular comeback. The Brazilian player mounted a strong fight from the third set onward, winning 6-3, 7-5, and 7-5 to complete an impressive victory after five grueling sets. This was only the second time in Djokovic's Grand Slam career that he lost after leading by two sets.

In the post-match press conference, Djokovic seemed unenthusiastic when asked whether he had considered his chances of advancing deep into the tournament after several strong contenders like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner had exited early.

"I don't care. I don't care. I'll stop the question here. Let's talk about something else.", Nole replied bluntly.

Despite his disappointment with the outcome, the Grand Slam record holder had plenty of praise for his young opponent. According to him, Fonseca showed remarkable composure in the decisive moments of the match.

"I have to give great credit to Joao. He fully deserves this victory. In the crucial moments of the fourth and fifth sets, he was the better player. Fonseca produced many outstanding shots and played very impressively.", the 39-year-old tennis player commented.

The Serbian star also admitted this was one of the most physically demanding matches he has played recently, having to face an opponent 20 years his junior. Nonetheless, Nole said he still felt proud of what he had given and was grateful for the support of the fans throughout the match.

As for himself, the victory over a tennis legend helps Joao Fonseca continue his memorable journey at Roland Garros. The young Brazilian will face one of the top contenders for this year's title, Casper Ruud, in the fourth round.
