Verdasco officially retired

In a high-profile ATP 500 Men's Doubles second round in Doha, the 41-year-old saw Verdasco and Novak Djokovic lose 5-7, 4-6 to second seeds Heliovara/Paten, ending the final match of her career. This is Verdasco's first official appearance since September 2023, and he expressed his gratitude to Djokovic for accompanying him through the "farewell match" in the interview.

"After more than a year without a competition, coming here to compete is a lot of mixed feelings. Before I spoke to him, I didn't even think about officially announcing my retirement or fighting a farewell fight. Now I'm glad that this is happening in Doha, I've lived here for 10 years, so it feels like my home, and there's no better way to retire than at home, with all my family, friends and people like Djokovic, who is undoubtedly the best player in the history of tennis and one of the best athletes in the sport. ”

Since turning professional in 2001, Verdasco has won seven ATP Tour titles, the highest of which is Barcelona. The Spaniard left-hander will reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open in 2009, the best Grand Slam record of his career, and his world ranking reached a personal high of No.7 in April 2009 and he qualified for the ATP Finals that year. Verdasco has won a whopping 559 singles tournaments in his career and has won the Davis Cup for Spain three times in 2008, 2009 and 2011.
