This is a promising sign for Vietnamese tennis after a period of stagnation in recent years.
The team tennis Vietnam's U16 team concluded an impressive journey at the 2026 Davis Cup Junior Asia-Oceania region with a ticket to the Finals qualifying round, after securing runner-up position at the tournament held in Colombo (Sri Lanka) ending on March 28.
Throughout a week of competition, two standout young stars of the country's current tennis scene, Le Tien Anh and Le Phu Gia, demonstrated stable performance, helping the Vietnamese team advance to the final match. Despite stopping before Malaysia with a 0-2 score in the decisive match, this result was sufficient for the team to earn a spot in the regional Finals qualifying round.
The Vietnamese team's journey to the final was highly praised for its professionalism and competitive spirit. In the quarter-finals, the young players overcame Saudi Arabia with a tight 2-1 score. Subsequently, in the semi-finals, Vietnam delivered a convincing performance by defeating Turkmenistan 2-0, thereby securing their place in the championship match.
It was unfortunate that Le Phu Gia suffered an injury and could not complete the first singles match, and later Le Tien Anh also faced defeat.
Although unable to win the championship, the performance of Vietnam's U16 players still received much praise from experts. According to the assessment of the Vietnam Tennis Federation, this is a clear step forward for the country's young tennis compared to the previous season, when the team could not pass the qualifying round to get closer to a higher-level competition.
Securing a ticket to the Asia-Oceania regional Finals qualifying round, scheduled to be held in Kazakhstan from May 18 to May 25, is not only an encouraging achievement but also opens up valuable opportunities for the young players to gain experience. This is seen as an important stepping stone in accumulating international experience, aiming to elevate Vietnamese tennis in the future.
