Iga Swiatek awaits revival on clay courts.

Iga Swiatek has just experienced one of the biggest shocks in her career by losing to compatriot Magda Linette at the Miami Open. That loss clearly exposed the psychological issues and form that the Polish tennis player is currently facing.

It will certainly be one of the most impressive comeback matches at the Miami Open 2026. Swiatek started impressively by winning 6-1 in the first set, but then allowed her opponent to surge strongly and win 7-5, 6-3. While experts were surprised, Swiatek herself admitted she is experiencing "the worst nightmare a tennis player can go through".

“Tennis has become very confusing in my head right now. I am naturally a thinker, but lately things have become overwhelming. I can't control my thoughts as before,” the owner of 6 Grand Slams expressed disappointment, admitting that the biggest problem currently is not technical, but psychological.

Psychological nightmare

It is noteworthy that this is the first time since 2019, when she was not yet in the Top 100, that Swiatek lost a match after winning the first set with a score of 6-0 or 6-1. This shows the unusual level of this defeat, because previously, when she gained an early advantage, she almost never allowed opponents to reverse the situation.

In reality, the loss to Linette is not an isolated accident, but the consequence of a prolonged slump. Since late 2024, when she started working with coach Wim Fissette, Swiatek has been adjusting her playing style. She is trying to balance patience in long rallies and proactive attacking when opportunities arise. However, this transition process has not yet yielded stable results.

Although she won Wimbledon last summer, Swiatek's form has generally been quite erratic recently. From the world number 1 position, she has dropped to number 3, and no longer maintains her previous dominance. Easy wins have gradually decreased, replaced by longer battles and more mistakes.

Another issue is instability in crucial situations. In the match against Linette, despite only losing her serve twice, Swiatek made many errors on return, preventing her from pressuring her opponent. This is completely opposite to the image of a player who once suffocated opponents with her ability to control matches.

Swiatek admitted that, even though the score didn't clearly reflect it, she felt like she "collapsed" in this match. This is particularly worrying, because long winning streaks and the ability to maintain advantage were once her greatest strengths that helped her dominate women's tennis. In 2022, she had a 37-match winning streak - the longest of the 21st century in WTA. Additionally, she also holds numerous records for wins after taking the first set.

For the first time in 5 years, Iga Swiatek was eliminated in her opening match at a tournament.

“Whether consciously or not, I am struggling with change. And then my game collapsed. I need to work to come back, because it's been a long time since I experienced this feeling,” Swiatek added.

Revival on clay courts?

Swiatek admitted she is under pressure from her own expectations: “I feel I am carrying too many expectations, but cannot meet them. Perhaps I need to let that go, because my current form is not good enough to think about big goals.” Nevertheless, Swiatek remains optimistic and believes the solution is not in major changes, but in gradual, persistent small adjustments. “There is no magic. You cannot change everything overnight. The important thing is to maintain discipline and improve step by step,” she emphasized.

In the current context, the upcoming break could be a valuable opportunity for Swiatek to recover both physically and mentally. After the Miami Open, she will have time to prepare for the clay court season - a phase considered her forte. The Stuttgart Open in mid-April will be an important starting point.

Clay courts have long been Swiatek's "safe zone," where she won 4 of her 6 Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros. However, even on this surface, she no longer maintains her previous invincibility. Last season, she did not win any titles on clay and was eliminated in the semifinals of Roland Garros - her first loss at this tournament in 4 years. This indicates the challenges ahead are not small. However, difficult moments like the present can become crucial turning points in a great player's career. With proven talent and peak experience, Swiatek has every basis to rediscover herself.

The question now is not whether Swiatek can return, but when. And perhaps, the upcoming clay courts will be the ideal place for her to begin her journey back to the glory that once belonged to her.

Iga Swiatek's terrible half-year

Iga Swiatek has not won any tournament since the WTA 500 Korea Open in September 2025. Throughout that half-year, she participated in 8 tournaments with a record of 17 wins - 10 losses, and never reached the semifinals.

Notably, the loss in Miami ended Iga Swiatek's streak of 73 consecutive wins in opening matches over the past 5 years.
