Asian young talent makes waves at Miami Open, reaching Djokovic's memorable milestone

Japan's tennis future shines with outstanding performance in this year's Miami Open debut match.

Young Japanese player Rei Sakamoto is becoming one of the most notable names at Miami Open 2026 by brilliantly securing his first career win at the ATP Tour level. This achievement marks a crucial turning point in the journey of this 19-year-old rising star from Asia.

Rei Sakamoto is a shining gem of Asian tennis, standing out with his powerful serve and strong forehand.

Given a special entry into the tournament, Sakamoto created a surprise by defeating the skilled American opponent Aleksandar Kovacevic in a tense three-set match (6-4; 3-6; 7-6 (9-7 tie-break)). The match was long and interrupted multiple times by weather, but the Japanese player demonstrated commendable resilience by successfully using his fifth match-point to seal the victory.

After the match concluded, Sakamoto drew particular attention by celebrating in the traditional Japanese sword-drawing style. This is Rei's familiar celebration, first seen when the 2006-born player won the Australian Open junior title, but it truly captivated global fans only at this year's Miami event.

This is Sakamoto's first time advancing past the first round after five consecutive losses in ATP Tour events, opening the opportunity to progress further in one of the season's most prestigious ATP 1000 tournaments. In the next round, he will face a major challenge named Daniil Medvedev—a player currently in high form who recently reached the final at Indian Wells.

Sakamoto's victory also contributes to creating a special impression for teenage players at Miami this year. Alongside names like Joao Fonseca, Darwin Blanch, and Rafael Jodar, he helps make this the first tournament since 2007 to feature five teenagers reaching the second round. Previously, the 2007 generation included great stars such as Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.
