ATP Miami Masters: Wu Yibing Falls Short in Opening Match, Alcaraz Defeats Fonseca

On March 20, 2026, the fourth day of competition unfolded at the ATP/WTA 1000 Miami event. Among the three Chinese players scheduled for their debut, only Wang Xinyu and Wu Yibing completed their matches successfully. Zheng Qinwen's match against former US Open champion Stephens was postponed to the following day due to rain.

Wu Yibing, competing with a wildcard, lost in the first round to Canadian player Diallo with scores of 2-6/6-7(3), failing to secure an opening victory. In this 90-minute contest, Wu Yibing hit 16 winners but committed 26 unforced errors. Furthermore, he failed to convert any of the seven break points he created, a stark contrast to his opponent's 100% (2/2) conversion rate, which was a key factor leading to his defeat.

Since his comeback from the Miami Masters qualifiers last year, Wu Yibing has maintained a year of uninterrupted healthy competition. During this period, he achieved notable results including a quarter-final at the ATP 500 Acapulco event, a semi-final at the ATP 250 Hangzhou event, and a championship at the Taylor Challenger. Despite a first-round exit resulting in a mandatory zero points contribution to his ranking, Wu Yibing's live ranking slightly improved by two positions to No.116, still approximately 60 points away from the TOP 100 threshold. Next, Wu Yibing will remain in North America to continue competing, aiming to return to the top 100 rankings.

In other men's singles matches, world number one Alcaras smoothly advanced by defeating Brazilian rising star Fonseca 6-4/6-4 in a highlighted match. Sixth seed Fritz battled through three sets to defeat Van de Schulp 6-3/6-7(2)/6-3. Fourteenth seed Khachanov defeated Spanish veteran Agut 6-3/6-3; twenty-second seed Paul narrowly defeated Mannarino 6-2/2-6/6-4.

Tsitsipas defeated fifth seed De Minaur 6-3/7-6(3), altering their head-to-head record to 14 wins and 2 losses. Italian star Berrettini needed only 88 minutes to eliminate tenth seed Bubrik 6-4/6-4. Additionally, two local players performed exceptionally well, upsetting seeded opponents: Quinn defeated eleventh seed Ruud in straight sets 6-3/7-6(7); Opelka overcame twenty-fifth seed Draper, who had shown strong form at the Indian Wells Masters, with scores of 7-6(3)/7-6(0).
