IW Masters: Alcaraz faces Medvedev, Sinner meets Zverev

The quarterfinals of the Indian Wells Masters unfolded without major surprises, as the top three seeds and the 11th seed Medvedev overcame their opponents to reach the semifinals. Each contest was decided in two sets. Of the four eliminated athletes, Norrie achieved the highest number of games won (7). The remaining three competitors departed with significant score deficits.

Quarterfinal results:

Upper halfTop seed Alcaraz and 11th seed Medvedev will meet in the semifinals.

Alcaras progressed smoothly, dropping only one set in the third round against Lindeknech, while winning all other matches in straight sets. This includes victories over Ruud in the fourth round and former champion Norrie in the quarterfinals.

11th seed MedvedevHis advancement to the semifinals involved some luck in the draw. His quarterfinal opponent, Draper, faced Djokovic in the fourth round in a thrilling three-set match that pushed both players to their physical limits. Draper ultimately prevailed in a deciding-set tiebreak. Regardless of whether Draper or Djokovic had won, after such a high-energy match the previous day, neither could have presented 100% form against Medvedev the next day.

Fortunately, Medvedev marched forward without losing a set to reach the semifinals. His defeated opponents include Tabilo, Baez, Michelsen, and British top player Draper.

Alcaraz holds a 6-2 lead over Medvedev in their head-to-head record. In 2024, Medvedev suffered three consecutive losses, and in 2025 he even lacked opportunities to face Sinner and Alcaraz.

2026 marks a year of resurgence for Medvedev, having already claimed titles in Brisbane and Dubai. Meeting Alcaraz again after two years, expectations are high for Medvedev to devise better tactics to counter Alcaraz's "ubiquitous drop shot" strategy.

If Medvedev wins this match, he will return to the ATP Top 10 rankings.

The lower half semifinal features Zverev (4) versus Sinner (2).

Zverev's performance in this tournament has been noteworthy, with noticeable efforts to increase proactive aggression. Particularly impressive were his straight-set victories over established players Tiafoe and Draper.

Sinner successively defeated two post-2005 youngsters, Fonseca and Lenachan. Especially the fourth-round match against Fonseca was a textbook example of two-set tiebreaks.

Zverev trails Sinner 4-6 in their head-to-head record. From 2024 to 2025, Zverev endured five consecutive losses, including last year's Australian Open final.

Thus, these two semifinals present opportunities for Medvedev and Zverev to "redeem past defeats." For Medvedev, if he cannot counter Alcaraz's drop shot technique, he could refine his own version of it. "Apply the opponent's method against them."

For Zverev, serving well makes him difficult for anyone to handle. However, he should avoid reckless net approaches; his volley positioning is inaccurate, resulting in low success rates.

We anticipate both semifinals to be sufficiently thrilling.
