Last night in the second round of Doha, Sinner beat Popyrin 6-3, 7-5 to secure a spot in the quarterfinals. Alcaraz also won against Ruud 6-2, 7-5 to advance. Considering this event only became a 500-level tournament last year, having the two highest-ranked ATP players competing is quite exceptional.
Could the first Sinner-Alcaraz match of 2026 take place in Doha? Alcaraz and Sinner, as the top two seeds, are positioned in the upper and lower halves of the draw respectively.

1. Top half (Alcaraz's section)
- Quarter 1: Alcaraz vs Khachanov
- Quarter 2: Tsitsipas vs Rublev
- Top half semifinal: Winner of Quarter 1 vs Winner of Quarter 2
2. Bottom half (Sinner's section)
- Quarter 3: Lehecka vs Fils
- Quarter 4: Menšík vs Sinner
- Bottom half semifinal: Winner of Quarter 3 vs Winner of Quarter 4
3. Final: Champion of top half vs Champion of bottom half
- Alcaraz’s chances to reach the top half final:
His opponent in Quarter 1 is Khachanov, against whom Alcaraz holds a perfect 5-0 record and also has the upper hand on hard courts, making his chances to reach the semifinals very high. The likely opponent in the top half semifinal is either Tsitsipas or Rublev, both of whom Alcaraz has good past results against, so the overall challenge to reach the final is manageable.
- Sinner’s chances to reach the bottom half final:
In Quarter 4, Sinner faces the young Czech Menšík, with no prior meetings between them. As the defending champion and one of the world’s top players, Sinner clearly dominates on hard courts. The other potential semifinal opponent is either Lehecka or Fils, against whom Sinner also holds clear advantages in skill and experience, making his path to the final quite probable.
With Sinner and Alcaraz anchoring the bottom and top halves respectively, they are expected to meet in the final if both perform as usual, marking their first encounter of the 2026 season.
