Alcaraz gained 1600 points at the Australian Open, extending his lead over Sinner in the race for world No. 1

Alcaraz, who claimed his maiden Australian Open trophy, currently tops the PIF ATP rankings with 13,650 points, 3,350 points ahead of second-ranked Sinner.

The importance of Alcaraz’s Australian Open triumph goes well beyond just this moment. Thanks to his success at Melbourne Park, he has significantly widened his lead over Jannik Sinner in the fight for world No. 1.

Last year, Alcaraz exited the Australian Open in the quarterfinals, defending only 400 points, which gave him substantial potential to gain more. By ultimately winning the title and earning 2,000 points, he capitalized on this opportunity, netting an additional 1,600 points.

On the other hand, as the defending champion, Sinner needed to protect the 2,000 points he earned last year. This year, he reached the semifinals and earned 800 points. Upon leaving Australia, his total points had decreased by 1,200 compared to before the tournament.

This means that after the Australian Open, the points gap between Alcaraz and Sinner surged by 2,800 points!

At the start of the season’s first Grand Slam, Alcaraz held only a 550-point lead over his rival. Thanks to Alcaraz’s point gains and Sinner’s losses, the battle for the top spot tilted heavily in Alcaraz’s favor by 2,800 points at once. Currently, Alcaraz leads Sinner by 3,350 points.

PIF ATP rankings and points:

1) Carlos Alcaraz — 13,650 points

2) Jannik Sinner — 10,300 points

3) Novak Djokovic — 5,280 points

4) Alexander Zverev — 4,605 points

5) Lorenzo Musetti — 4,405 points

That said, the season is still in its early stages, with many points still up for grabs in the coming weeks and months. Sinner, who first reached world No. 1 and held the spot for 65 consecutive weeks, saw that streak end last year after losing to Alcaraz in the US Open final. Their tussle for the top ranking continues: after winning the Paris Masters in November, Sinner briefly reclaimed No. 1 for a week, before Alcaraz secured the PIF ATP year-end No. 1 title for the second time in Turin.

Sinner ranks 12th among the 29 members of the ATP No. 1 club with 66 weeks at the top; Alcaraz follows closely in 14th place with 57 weeks. In every encounter and points exchange between them, Alcaraz and Sinner remain neck and neck, constantly chasing each other.

With his victory in Melbourne, Alcaraz claimed his seventh Grand Slam title and completed a career Grand Slam — an achievement that Sinner will have the chance to challenge for at Roland Garros (the French Open) later this year.
