Djokovic: Unsure if he will participate in the Australian Open again; plans to return next year but not necessarily as an active player

During yesterday’s awards event, Djokovic’s comment led to rumors about him retiring this year. He stated, “God knows what happens tomorrow, let alone in 6 months or 12 months. It has been a great ride. I love you guys.” Then, at the post-match press conference, he personally confirmed the possibility that he might retire this year.

At the post-match press conference, a reporter asked if he would compete in the Australian Open next year. After a long pause, the ten-time champion surprised everyone by saying, “I will come back to Australia, but maybe not as an active player.”

Djokovic elaborated, “I don’t know, and I’m not sure if I’ll see the crowd here again. Because of that uncertainty, I haven’t ruled out any possibilities. You have followed me for so long and know that I don’t pretend or put on an act; I always speak honestly. Over the past few months, even the last year and a half, I have told you that I really don’t know my limits or exactly what I will do.”

Djokovic admitted that he is currently in a “transitional phase at the end of his career” and acknowledged that “Alcaraz and Sinner are now better players than me.” Regarding his previous statement about participating in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, he showed an open attitude: “I once said I wanted to compete in the 2028 Olympics. That might mean playing one match a year, or ten, fifteen, or maybe two or seven... I don’t want to decide my schedule and future so early. At this moment, I can’t talk or think about the next steps or upcoming tournaments.”

Regarding the future of his career, Djokovic remains open-minded, saying, “I don’t want to decide my schedule and future so early. Right now, I can’t discuss or consider what comes next or the tournaments ahead.”

Djokovic confessed that during his last two matches at the Australian Open, the crowd gave him a truly unforgettable emotional experience. He felt this was something he had never encountered here before. Therefore, his heart is now filled with deep gratitude. After a long struggle with the outside world, to finally feel such love and support near the end of his career moves him greatly.

At the end of the press conference, Djokovic reiterated his words: “I think everything I have now is worth all of this, and I sincerely thank you all. I still want to say that I will return to Australia next year; whether it will be as an active player, we will find out in time.” With this statement, Djokovic concluded the press conference that sparked countless speculations.

Fans and commentators expressed mixed reactions on social media to Djokovic’s remarks. A veteran tennis journalist commented, “Djokovic’s words are both a defense of his achievements and an honest acceptance of the passage of time. He no longer pretends he can dominate this sport forever, and that honesty is admirable.”

Some fans wrote on social media, “If Djokovic really retires after the Australian Open, it will be one of the most graceful farewells I’ve ever seen. 24 Grand Slam titles, a legend forever.” But many others expressed sadness: “Please don’t retire; we’re not ready to say goodbye to Novak!” “Tennis won’t be the same without Djokovic.”

Whatever decision Djokovic ultimately makes, he has already left an indelible mark on tennis history. The lights at Rod Laver Arena dim, while discussions about the future of this legendary player are just beginning.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Lu Xiaotian)
