Raducanu remains one of the most controversial players in tennis, as many wonder how her career will play out. From a budding player at Wimbledon to winning a Grand Slam title two months later, her career has had its ups and downs.
Since then, her career has been plagued by frequent injuries and inconsistent performances. Although she played well at times and performed similar to her form when she won the US Open in 2021, it was not ideal overall. Many are optimistic that she will return to the top in 2025. Last year, she played the full season without major injuries, and now it's time to really step up her competitiveness, however, she hasn't had a great start to the year.
So far this season, Raducanu has competed in two tournaments. She defeated Alexandrova and Anisimova at the Australian Open before losing to Swiatek.
She then traveled to Singapore for a 250 tournament, but lost to Buksa in three sets yesterday in the first round. While Raducanu can find some positives from these games, it also exposes a number of problems. First of all, she is not as confident in her game as she used to be. When she was at the US Open a few years ago, she came with a "fearless" confidence, but that confidence is no longer there.
This was particularly evident against Swiatek in Melbourne, who had no confidence she could win. This lack of confidence doesn't match her actual potential and undermines her strengths.
Unfortunately, health problems seem to have been with Raducanu all the time. The Englishman has already suffered a number of injuries at the beginning of his career. At just 22 years old, she faces so many health concerns, which are extremely detrimental to her future development, as these problems usually do not improve over time.
She underwent three surgeries to address some of her injuries and has largely avoided major injuries since then. Even so, minor injuries kept coming up and hindered her from continuing to compete, which is key to building confidence.
And, if she can't compete consistently, it's hard to build pace and confidence. Even at the start of the season, she still suffers from some physical problems that are not caused by long-term high-intensity competition. If this continues, she could fall into an "injury cycle" and not reach her full potential.
Another topic related to Raducanu is her coaching issue. Although she is only 22 years old and has only been in her career for a few years, she has already worked with dozens of coaches. She fired the coach who helped her win the tournament shortly after winning the US Open, a move that shocked the tennis world and drew many criticisms.
Subsequently, she hired several well-respected coaches, but the frequent change was once again questioned. Constantly changing coaches is not conducive to building long-term partnerships, as coaches need time to help players implement strategies and improve their capabilities. She herself has made some confusing remarks about the coach, sparking more controversy.
Many analysts and former players have urged her to stabilize and work with a coach for the long term, but that doesn't seem to have changed this year either. After working with Nick Cavaday for a while, she ended the relationship three days ago. The reason for the breakup seems to be related to the individual coach rather than Raducanu's problem, but the trend of frequent coach changes is worrying.
Since winning the US Open, Raducanu's career can be described as "chaotic". She is not yet close to realising her potential, injury issues remain, and some of her own options are puzzling that has fans in doubt.
The first month of 2025 has been a mediocre one for Raducanu, but fans are still expecting her to make a breakthrough in the coming months. Only time will tell what the future holds.(Source: Tennis Home Author: Spark)
