Russian tennis legend harshly criticizes Alcaraz for overly obeying his father's control, Raducanu reflects on gender differences

Recently, Russian tennis legend Kafelnikov openly criticized on camera that Alcaraz’s father’s interference in his son’s career was “the biggest mistake.”

The Russian legend stated, “I don’t know why he doesn’t tell his father: ‘Listen, this is my own matter, we have been very successful together, won numerous Grand Slams, and made a lot of money together...’” He added, “But that last part disappointed me a bit.”

Kafelnikov acknowledged Ferrero’s professionalism, admitting he knows Ferrero very well. He described Ferrero as highly professional and said that, due to his experience as a pro player, he takes great care of his players. Therefore, he is confident that players coached by him receive the best guidance. He stated that losing Ferrero is definitely a “huge loss” for Alcaraz.

However, the legend also understands the temptations young players face: “It’s understandable: you’re 22, all the girls are after you, you have fame and all the allure. At such a young age, no one can resist that.”

On social media, many users support Kafelnikov’s viewpoint, believing professional athletes should have autonomy. But some directly questioned, “Can parents really influence a player’s choices? It’s strange because if the player insists on something, parents would hardly change his mind. After all, Alcaraz is no longer a kid; he is a tennis superstar earning tens of millions annually and fully capable of controlling his own life without being swayed by his parents.”

As Alcaraz’s split with Ferrero sparked debates about coach-player relationships and family interference in pro tennis, British player Raducanu recently shared her perspective on the heated “gender battle,” focusing on the huge differences in power and ball quality between men and women.

“I didn’t practice with Alcaraz for long in New York, but his hitting power was impressive. It felt like he wasn’t swinging particularly hard, yet the ball came with great force,” Raducanu described.

She further analyzed, “Among female players, most hit flatter shots except for Iga (Swiatek), who applies heavy topspin. There are exceptions like Aryna (Sabalenka), whose shots are very heavy. But overall, men’s shots are heavier.”

Raducanu pointed out the tactical impact of this power difference: “You think you’ve hit a good shot, but they can still get back into position, hit a stronger ball, and use your speed against you. Of course, there’s also the serve.”

Social media is filled with criticism, with some users bluntly stating, “I support Raducanu’s view that men’s and women’s tennis are fundamentally two different sports. The difference is huge and is clearly visible to the naked eye.”

By the courtside, Kafelnikov’s criticism still echoes; on the court, the gender debate continues. Professional tennis is seeking a way forward in balancing commercial interests, competitive essence, and social values in this era.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Lu Xiaotian)
