Ferrero's remarks anger foreign fans and draw criticism for insensitivity: he specifically chose to give an interview to a newspaper that had previously attacked Alcaraz.

Ferrero recently spoke in an interview about his position following the conclusion of his coaching tenure with Alcaraz. Yet, fans did not approve of his statements. The news of their separation a week prior sent shockwaves through the tennis community.

Given Alcaraz’s achievement of securing 8 championships out of 11 finals in the 2025 season, this split was particularly unexpected. Ferrero began coaching Alcaraz back in 2019 when the player was only 15 years old and guided him to 24 career titles, including 6 Grand Slam trophies.

To quell speculation surrounding the reasons for their split, Ferrero granted an exclusive interview to Spain’s Marca newspaper. He stated that he originally intended to continue working together but encountered issues during contract renewal. Had there been better communication, there might have been a chance to salvage the partnership, but that was not the case.

“From Carlos’s environment, they have his best interests in mind; from my perspective, I also have to consider myself. We couldn’t reach agreement on certain matters. Perhaps if we had sat down and talked them through, those issues could have been resolved, but in the end, we didn’t do so, and decided not to continue working together. That’s what really happened,” Ferrero said.

Ferrero then spoke further about the ups and downs during their collaboration. However, after reading the full interview, many fans felt the former coach was shifting blame onto Alcaraz.

Many fans flooded X (formerly Twitter) to express their dissatisfaction. Some praised Ferrero’s “clever manipulation” of public opinion, while others questioned why no confidentiality agreement was signed, allowing him to openly discuss internal matters. “Ferrero’s PR skills are excellent, but Carlos’s are not. Now Carlos is under attack, and to me, it’s clear: Ferrero indirectly criticized him in Marca and Clay magazine, avoided revealing the real reasons behind the contract breakdown, then gave a ‘poor me’ style interview — this is completely unacceptable,” one user wrote.

“I don’t understand why he continues to incite hatred against Carlos, especially towards his family, even though he has already gained public support,” another user commented. “There is absolutely no sign of any confidentiality agreement, which really strikes me as ridiculous,” other fans added.

“What’s even more puzzling is that Ferrero chose to give an interview to a tabloid with a history of attacking Alcaraz. If you can’t see the problem, then I just have to laugh,” one user wrote. “Private matters should stay private — stop explaining!”

Currently, Ferrero has not announced coaching any other players, and Alcaraz has yet to reveal his new head coach. However, the 22-year-old is not without leadership. Samuel López, who previously served as Ferrero’s assistant coach, will temporarily take over all related responsibilities.

López was already a member of Ferrero’s team, and the two share a close connection. In December 2024, López joined Alcaraz’s team as the second coach.

With Ferrero’s departure, López will officially assume the responsibility of coaching Alcaraz. This arrangement may be long-term or just temporary until a new head coach is appointed.

Before coaching Alcaraz, López worked with Busta for ten years until 2024. He helped his compatriot win 7 titles, reach two Grand Slam semifinals, and achieve a career-high world ranking of No. 10.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Spark)
