Alcaraz Coaching Change Suspense: Six Candidates Emerge as Australian Open Preparation Becomes a Race Against Time

On the eve of the 2026 season, tennis world was shaken by major news — world number one Carlos Alcaraz has ended his long-term partnership with veteran coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, sparking widespread discussion. With only a month left before the Australian Open, Alcaraz must swiftly appoint a new coach to ensure smooth tournament preparation. Currently, six potential candidates have come into the spotlight, officially kicking off the competition for the new coaching role.

Top Internal Candidate: Samuel López

Following Ferrero’s departure,Samuel Lópezwas promoted to interim head coach, making him the leading internal candidate for the permanent position. With extensive coaching experience dating back to the 1990s, he co-founded the Equelite Tennis Academy and has guided Pablo Carreño Busta since 2015. Joining Alcaraz’s team in 2024, López has independently led the squad at the Australian Open and shared the “Coach of the Year” award with Ferrero. Kiko Navarro, Alcaraz’s first coach, openly stated that López is very likely to become the full-time head coach, needing only additional coaching support to handle the long season. His seamless transition advantage is especially crucial ahead of the Australian Open.

Veteran Candidate: David Ferrer

Former Spain Davis Cup captain David Ferrer, recommended by Brad Gilbert, is a strong contender. The two collaborated during Davis Cup, and Ferrer has also coached Alexander Zverev, bringing top-player coaching experience. However, Ferrer remains cautious; in an April interview, he did not rule out the possibility of working together but emphasized that Alcaraz’s current team is well-structured, making his willingness to take over uncertain. His candidacy is therefore full of uncertainties.

Legendary Influence: Carlos Moyá

Carlos Moyá, former coach of Nadal, is a highly favored candidate. Since 2016, Moyá helped Nadal win nine Grand Slam titles, establishing himself as a legendary coach. If paired with Alcaraz, he could replicate that successful player-coach dynamic. Moyá’s expertise in managing big-match mentality and season planning aligns well with Alcaraz’s development needs and has Gilbert’s strong support. However, differences in their technical systems may pose short-term adjustment challenges.

I prefer Moyá. Low-key, intelligent, and easy to work with.

There were rumors this year that Moyá would coach Sinner after Cahill’s retirement in 2026, but Moyá personally denied these reports.

Dream Scenario: Rafael Nadal

Personally, I think this remains just a “dream”.

Retired Nadal is also listed as a candidate. Although his full-time coaching experience is limited, his 22 Grand Slam titles make him a top-tier mentor. Currently focused on youth training and philanthropy, if he agrees to take the role, he could pass on invaluable major tournament experience and provide resource support. However, Nadal’s coaching willingness is unclear, so whether this “legendary duo” can materialize remains uncertain.

Champion Backup: Goran Ivanišević

Former Djokovic coach Goran Ivanišević is also recommended as a backup option. Ivanišević worked with Djokovic for six years, winning multiple Grand Slams and demonstrating top tactical skills. After parting ways with Djokovic in 2024, he coached Tsitsipas. His flexible tactical thinking and understanding of elite opponents could inject fresh energy into Alcaraz’s game, though style differences might cause adaptation issues.

In fact, this is also a highly unlikely combination.

Cross-Field Wildcard: Andy Murray

Andy Murray is the least likely candidate but not entirely impossible. He temporarily coached Djokovic to the Australian Open semifinals in 2025 but paused coaching to focus on business ventures. However, the chance to coach Alcaraz might lure him back. Murray’s tenacious court spirit and rich experience could offer valuable mental and technical guidance to the young star.

With the Australian Open preparation imminent, the final decision on Alcaraz’s new coach will not only affect his season performance but also influence the broader tennis landscape.

Who do you think is most likely to become Alcaraz’s head coach?
