The ATP Board has approved a new heat response rule set to take effect in the 2026 season. This move aligns ATP’s measures with those of the WTA, enhancing protection for players competing under extreme weather conditions. The new policy uses the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) as a standard, establishing clear cooling thresholds and match suspension criteria for best-of-three singles matches on the tour.

Ten-minute cooling break
When the WBGT index reaches 30.1°C or above during the first two sets of a best-of-three singles match, cooling measures will be activated. Either player may request a 10-minute cooling break after the second set, which applies to both players simultaneously. During this break, players can use cooling devices, hydrate, change clothing, shower, and receive coaching under the supervision of the ATP medical team.
Match suspension protocol
Matches will be suspended if the WBGT index exceeds 32.2°C.
The new heat policy employs a standardized management approach based on medical advice to address extreme heat, aiming to protect players’ health and safety while also improving conditions for spectators, officials, ball kids, and event staff.
