The Argentina Open has officially invited Djokovic to participate, raising the question: will his South American debut become a reality?

Key update: Argentina Open director Martin Jaite has openly stated his desire for Djokovic to join the event in 2026, on the condition that Djokovic comes to South America for the Davis Cup match between Serbia and Chile.

According to reports from overseas, Novak Djokovic’s 2026 season blueprint is unfolding step by step, and an invitation to a tournament he has never entered before introduces fresh suspense to the Serbian legend’s itinerary.

Djokovic has confirmed that he will start the new season in January with theAdelaide International tournamentbefore aiming for the Australian Open title, a rhythm of competition he knows well and excels at. However, his plans after the Australian Open are drawing attention — he is likely to travel to South America to represent Serbia in the Davis Cup qualifier against Chile, which has caught the eye of Argentina Open director Martin Jaite. Jaite has openly extended a warm invitation to Djokovic:“If he competes in Chile, we are very much looking forward to seeing him in Buenos Aires.”

What makes this invitation special is that Djokovic has never participated in a South American “Golden” series event in his career, as he has historically preferred hard courts in Europe and the Middle East.

The 2026 Argentina Open is scheduled to begin on February 9, and the player field is already compelling: local star Francisco Cerundolo has confirmed his participation, Matteo Berrettini will join, and Gael Monfils, who is about to retire, will make his final appearance in South America; although defending champion Joao Fonseca’s return is not yet confirmed, the 2025 tournament dark horse — who defeated local favorites en route to victory and is seen as a potential challenger to Alcaraz and Sinner — also draws significant fan interest.

Whether Djokovic will make this “debut” depends largely on whether he joins the Serbian Davis Cup team. From a deeper strategic perspective on tournament choices, the tennis legend’s participation is plausible: although his career focus has always been on Grand Slams, in 2025 he still competed in three ATP 250 events, winning titles in Geneva and the Greece Open, pushing his career title count past 100 (currently 101), and closing in on Jimmy Connors’ Open Era men’s singles record of 109 titles by just eight. Considering his age and the increasing difficulty of winning at Grand Slams and Masters 1000 events, increasing his ATP 250 appearances might be a strategy to chase records, which also hints at the Argentina Open invitation’s significance.

The final decision may only become clear once the Davis Cup team roster is officially announced.
