Federer officially announced to appear at next year's Australian Open! Who will be his opponent?

For the first time in Australian Open history, the opening ceremony will take place on January 17. Yet, when the organizers announced the guest list, one name instantly caused a stir in the tennis community: Roger Federer.

This six-time Australian Open winner, renowned for his unparalleled elegance, artistry, and command that shaped a generation of tennis players, is set to return to Rod Laver Arena. However, this time, he won’t be competing for a Grand Slam title but rather for memories, celebration, and farewell. In a quickly viral lighthearted video, Federer playfully hinted at his return: “Hello everyone, I was thinking, Switzerland is really cold right now, so I need to head back to Australia to escape the chill.”

Since Federer retired in 2022, fans have eagerly awaited his presence at the “Happy Slam” once more. That moment will finally arrive next January. Reports say Federer will participate in a special “Battle of the World No.1s” exhibition match, sharing the court with four-time Australian Open champion Agassi, as well as Australian legends Laver and Hewitt.

“It feels like such a long time ago when I dubbed the Australian Open the ‘Happy Slam,’ and reflecting on it still brings a smile to my face. I’ve experienced so many emotions here... the joy of lifting the Norman Brookes trophy six times, the honor of playing in front of Rod Laver himself, the challenge of facing my greatest rivals, and the endless love and support from Australian fans.”

To Federer, the Australian Open feels like a second home, where the crowd’s cheers are like warm embraces. He admits that his 2017 comeback victory is one of his most treasured Grand Slam memories, while his 2018 win felt like a “dream come true.” “I can’t wait to return to the Australian Open and create more wonderful moments with all the Aussie fans.”

Even the Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley expressed his excitement to see Federer and other legends step onto Rod Laver Arena again. Fans worldwide aren’t just watching out of nostalgia—they’re seizing a precious opportunity to witness Federer walk onto the court that holds his most glorious memories. The ‘Happy Slam’ seems even happier now, doesn’t it?

Since retiring on September 23, 2022, Federer has embarked on a new chapter of life—family time, business ventures, philanthropy, and ambassador roles. Yet, the rhythm of the tennis court, the bounce of the ball, and the electric energy of live crowds have always tugged at him. Earlier this year, he spoke about how much he misses the sport: “I miss tennis. I’ve hardly played since retiring.”

In an interview with L’Equipe, he admitted he really wants to train again, “I’d like to practice two to three times a week. I also hope to keep playing exhibition matches, filling stadiums around the world. Although there are no plans right now, I miss those experiences.”

Speaking of exhibitions, fans still eagerly anticipate a rematch between him and Nadal. In a November 2025 interview with Le Dauphiné, Federer discussed the possibility of such a match: “If it really happens, that would be amazing. Playing exhibitions after retirement means more time and no rush to jump into a new lifestyle. I can imagine combining it with charity work, raising funds for my foundation, and inspiring kids. There’s nothing concrete yet, but I see some interesting ideas emerging.”

So yes, he does have an interest in stepping back on the court. But will Federer consider other roles soon, like coaching or commentating? He answered, “If you asked me now, I’d say no. I don’t have the time. And everyone knows that, so no one asks (laughs). But never say never.”

He said he is open to “mentoring” young players, and who knows what the future holds? So if one day you see him on the sidelines analyzing tactics for players, don’t be surprised.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Spark)
