Ferrero and Lopez Crowned 2025 ATP Coaches of the Year

On December 11, 2025, the ATP revealed the yearly award winners, honoring Juan Carlos Ferrero and Samuel Lopez as Coaches of the Year for their exceptional mentorship of Alcaraz. This Spanish duo not only helped Alcaraz reclaim the PIF ATP world No.1 ranking but also secured the year-end No.1 title, capturing eight tour titles this season—including the French Open, US Open, and three ATP Masters 1000 events—and leading the season with 71 match wins, marking the best performance of his career.

Ferrero became the first coach to win the ATP Coach of the Year award twice since its inception in 2016 (having first won in 2022), while Lopez joined the team before the 2025 season, forming a perfect complement to Ferrero. The two have known each other for years and share highly aligned coaching philosophies, emphasizing hard work and discipline while fostering a relaxed and enjoyable team atmosphere. Ferrero admitted that sharing this honor with Lopez made it even more meaningful: “He completely fits our working philosophy and showed great professionalism from the start.” Lopez humorously noted that “the results made everything fall into place,” revealing that the team always prioritizes “making training fun” to help Alcaraz maintain peak performance.

Alcaraz’s journey this season was not without challenges; struggles at Indian Wells and Miami Masters shook his confidence, especially his debut loss to Goffin in Miami, which put the team into a period of adjustment. Ferrero recalled that the team approached this psychologically, communicating with Alcaraz more as friends than just coaches to help him overcome the slump. The turning point was winning the Monte Carlo Masters—although not flawless, Alcaraz’s perfect attitude restored his confidence, leading to two more clay-court titles (Rome Masters and French Open) and an astonishing 22-1 clay record. Lopez stated that this victory “clarified the season’s direction and marked a mental maturation.”

Notably, the Coach of the Year award is voted on by fellow coaches, and Ferrero’s four nominations and two wins highlight the high regard the industry holds for his coaching skills. Regarding the honor, Ferrero said, “I never aimed to win awards, but recognition from peers is deeply meaningful.” Lopez fondly remembered the French Open win and securing the year-end No.1 in Turin, attributing the success to teamwork and Alcaraz’s growth. Looking ahead to the 2026 season, both expressed their commitment to sustaining Alcaraz’s ambition, “never settling for current achievements, pursuing more goals with joy and determination.”
