As mentioned in yesterday’s article where I listed the ATP’s top five surprising Grand Slam matches, this time I present the year’s five finest Grand Slam showdowns. Take a look:
5️⃣ Wimbledon Fourth Round: Norrie 6-3 7-6(4) 6-7(7) 6-7(5) 6-3 Jarry
One is a former semifinalist and Britain’s top player, the other a former South American number one; both have seen significant ranking drops from their peaks, yet they delivered their season’s best performances at Wimbledon.
The two fought through a five-set thriller to the final set, enduring three tiebreaks. Although Norrie lost two of those tiebreaks, he ultimately held victory firmly in his hands.

4️⃣ US Open First Round: Bonzi 6-3 7-5 6-7(5) 0-6 6-4 Medvedev
Another five-set battle, featuring long-time Grand Slam rivals. Despite being a former champion, Medvedev’s form was poor throughout the year, and in the end, his persistent nemesis Bonzi prevailed. Even after getting bageled in the fourth set, the tenacious Frenchman still emerged victorious.

3️⃣ French Open Second Round: Fils 7-6(3) 7-6(4) 2-6 0-6 6-4 Munar
Another French player triumphed! Fils, who showed promise earlier this year, faced a tough battle against the stubborn Spaniard Munar on home soil. Though he won in front of his home crowd, subsequent injuries forced him to exit the season early, causing a sharp drop in his ranking.

2️⃣ Australian Open Quarterfinal: Djokovic 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-4 Alcaraz
The only match among the top five that didn’t go to five sets, but its significance was unquestionable. Djokovic, a former champion, needed a win to reach the semifinals again. Historically, he only once failed to win the title after reaching the semis. For Alcaraz, victory would extend his Grand Slam quest; defeat meant an early end. Ultimately, the Melbourne king advanced.

1️⃣ French Open Final: Alcaraz 4-6 6-7(4) 6-4 7-6(3) 7-6(10-2) Sinner
A match worthy of the title “best Grand Slam final in history”! Alcaraz, on the brink of defeat, mounted a heroic comeback to claim an unassailable position. After repeatedly saving match points, the momentum shifted decisively, and the Spaniard overcame his opponent to successfully defend his title. Sinner could only accept the bitter loss, but considering he later won Wimbledon, Alcaraz’s resilience keeps their Grand Slam rivalry very much alive.
