In the third round of the Australian Open that just ended, French veteran Monfils defeated the No. 4 seed Fritz 3:1!
This is definitely an ending that fans all over the world can't even think of.
Monfils, born on September 1, 1986, is racing continuously in the 2025 season. He first reached the second round in Brisbane (losing to Djokovic) and won the title in Auckland. It was the 13th tour title of his career.
Monfils, who rushed to the Australian Open non-stop, went through a five-set battle in the first round, defeating the No. 30 seed Percari and advancing to the second round.
Then in the second round, he defeated Germany's Altmaier in straight sets.
Next, the veteran's story is even more exciting! In the third round, Monfils defeated No. 4 seed Fritz 3-6/7-5/7-6(1)/6-4!
Fritz is currently ranked fourth in the ATP rankings and is in the best period of his career. He reached the final of the 2024 US Open, his best result at a Grand Slam event.
Fritz, who was born on October 28, 1997, is almost 11 years younger than Monfils. It was an outstanding victory for the veteran. Compared to Djokovic's promotion, it is even more gratifying. With this victory, Lao Meng's ATP instant ranking came to a pity of 32nd!
While blessing the veterans, I can't help but ask, what happened to the post-95 players?!
In this year's Australian Open, the No. 6 seed Ruud was out in the second round, and the three Russian heroes - Rublev, Medvedev, and Khachanov were collectively out. Without exception, they all lost to the new generation of players after 2005.
Now the No. 4 seed Fritz is also out. The difference is that he lost to a post-85 veteran!
The post-90s, post-95s, are really trying to survive in the slits!
