Aliassime stages a comeback to reach the ATP Finals semifinals, set to face Alcaraz

On November 14, 2025, at the Turin ATP Finals, Canadian player Aliassime showed impressive form to complete a group stage comeback, beating two-time champion Zverev in straight sets, reaching the knockout phase for the first time and locking in a semifinal berth.

Aliassime’s journey through the Bjorn Borg group was quite dramatic. At the start, he lost his first group match 0-2 to Sinner, then came back from a set down to defeat Shelton, narrowly avoiding elimination; however, the 25-year-old Canadian quickly regained form, first winning 2-1 against Shelton, then convincingly beating Zverev 6-4, 7-6(4), eventually qualifying as the group’s second place, just behind group leader Sinner.

This victory marked Aliassime’s 50th tour win of the season and made history—he became the second Canadian after Raonic in 2016 to reach the ATP Finals semifinals. Notably, this also extended his unbeaten record against Zverev in 2025, having previously defeated him in the third round of the US Open, although in their overall head-to-head, Zverev still leads 6-4.

The match was full of tension. In the first set, Aliassime withstood immense pressure on his serve, saving break points at 30/40 in both the fifth and ninth games, then capitalized on Zverev’s dip in form during the tenth game to attack. Despite Zverev saving three set points at 4-5, 0-40, Aliassime sealed the set on the fourth set point with a brilliant inside-out forehand winner.

In the second set, both players experienced fluctuations, and the contest became tightly contested. Zverev, who won this tournament in 2021, struggled visibly, frequently signaling to his team and showing frustration; meanwhile, Aliassime squandered multiple break chances on return, missing three break points at one stage. At the critical moment, he maintained composure and demonstrated exceptional steadiness in the tiebreak, taking advantage of Zverev’s consecutive errors to secure two mini-breaks while leading 5-4, ultimately clinching victory after two hours and seven minutes of intense battle.

With three of the four semifinal spots taken by players born after 2000, does this signal the rise of the post-2000 generation dominating the tennis world?

Aliassime will face Alcaraz in the semifinals as he aims for his fourth ATP Tour title of the 2025 season—so far, he has claimed championships in Adelaide, Montpellier, and Brussels. Additionally, Aliassime has amassed 85 career indoor wins, ranking first on the tour over the past decade, five more than second-ranked Sinner, highlighting his dominance on indoor courts.

Looking forward to Aliassime’s performance in the semifinals!
