Kuznetsova: Leybakina’s refusal to take a photo commands respect; it is a form of hurt for Russian fans when she represents another country

Recently, Kazakh player Leybakina’s refusal to pose for a photo with WTACEO after winning the championship has stirred much controversy. In response, former Grand Slam champion and Russian star Kuznetsova shared her opinion, stating that Leybakina’s refusal is commendable and she respects her for standing firm on her principles!

Kuznetsova posted a lengthy commentary on social media praising Leybakina’s courage, saying, “I still remember the many criticisms and pressures she faced because of her relationship with her coach. Despite all this, she has always fought for what she believes is right, no matter the difficulties.”

She specifically highlighted that Leybakina’s act of refusing the photo was “a powerful gesture that commands respect.”

Along with her praise, Kuznetsova also expressed some regret, stating, “I must admit, it is deeply painful to see such a talented athlete competing for another country; this is a profound hurt for all Russian fans.”

As a two-time Grand Slam champion, Kuznetsova’s words reveal her complex feelings about the loss of tennis talent from Russia.

Many netizens resonated strongly with Kuznetsova’s comments. One user believed, “Leybakina’s refusal to take a photo was not a spontaneous act but an outburst of long-standing dissatisfaction with the WTA management. Despite clear opposition and complaints from players, the WTA still failed to consider the lack of evidence and justification in suspending Vukov. The WTA claims the punishment protects players, but this arbitrary and presumptuous approach actually disregards human rights, which is infuriating.”

However, some media took an opposing stance, with an article describing Leybakina’s behavior as overly rude and calling it “the highest single prize money photo refusal in women’s sports history,” pointing out she gave up a $5.235 million moment of glory.

Some netizens showed great interest in the issue of Russian tennis talent leaving, saying, “A key reason Leybakina changed her nationality was the lack of financial support from the Russian Tennis Federation. Therefore, this is an internal national issue and the focus should not be overly on the player’s nationality change.”

Other users cited “Kasakina” to oppose Kuznetsova’s view, saying, “Hurt? What about the physical and mental harm the players suffer? Kasakina was basically ‘forced’ to leave, wasn’t she? Stop using so-called ‘talent loss’ as an excuse; this isn’t talent loss but choosing to thrive where conditions are better!”

Lastly, it’s worth noting that 12 hours after Leybakina’s refusal incident, the WTA official website issued a brief statement announcing a re-evaluation of the coach suspension rules. Although the statement did not mention the controversy directly, it remains thought-provoking. Despite many still opposing Leybakina’s action, her mentor revealed the core issue in a local media interview, describing his protégé’s character: “She doesn’t dislike photos; she just hates being ordered around.”

Leybakina’s response was simple and straightforward: “I’m not protesting anything, I just chose where I wanted to stand.” What do you think about this? Feel free to share your views and opinions in the comments section.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Lu Xiaotian)
