The Serbian tennis superstar officially bids farewell to the ATP’s prestigious year-end tournament.
Novak Djokovic has pulled out of the ATP Finals due to a shoulder injury, shortly after winning the 101st title of his career. The 24-time Grand Slam champion confirmed this news on November 8.
The 38-year-old player will be replaced in the Jimmy Connors group by Lorenzo Musetti, who recently lost to Djokovic in the final in Athens on November 8.
“I was really looking forward to competing in Turin and giving my best, but after today’s final in Athens, I am very sad to announce that I must withdraw due to an unresolved injury,” Djokovic shared on social media.
“I sincerely apologize to the fans who hoped to see me play – your support means a lot. I wish all the players a fantastic tournament, and I look forward to returning to the court with everyone as soon as possible!”
Djokovic – who holds the record with seven ATP Finals titles – was expected to face Carlos Alcaraz at the season-ending event, scheduled to start on November 9 in Turin.
Djokovic had qualified long ago but left fans guessing about his participation in this prestigious tournament until earlier this week.
On November 4, the President of the Italian Tennis Federation, Angelo Binaghi, announced that Djokovic had confirmed his attendance at the ATP Finals.
Djokovic’s withdrawal is good news for Musetti, who previously needed to defeat the Serbian in Athens to claim the spot from Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Now, the ATP Finals will feature two Italian players for the first time, with reigning champion Jannik Sinner in the Bjorn Borg group alongside Auger-Aliassime, Ben Shelton, and Alexander Zverev.
Musetti will make his debut at this tournament and will face Taylor Fritz in the opening match on November 10.
Djokovic also missed the 2024 ATP Finals due to injury. The last time he participated was in 2023 when he defeated Sinner to win the title.
