The reason behind Djokovic's relocation to Greece

In November 2024, the collapse of the Novi Sad train station canopy in Serbia triggered large-scale protests, with the public blaming the government for negligence and corruption. The protests then expanded to various regions and intensified over time. In December of the same year, Serbian sports legend Djokovic publicly expressed support on social media for student-led anti-government protests, emphasizing the importance of listening to young people. This stance made him a target of pro-government media in Serbia, with outlets like Informer labeling him a “disgrace” and a “fake patriot.”

Affected by these events, Djokovic moved to Greece with his family around September 2025, beginning to adapt to life there. On November 4th, during an interview, he confirmed having lived in Greece for two months, describing the initial phase of his new life as “very smooth,” and noting the kindness and warm welcome from locals. He also stated that the move was not intended as a permanent plan but rather a decision influenced by changes in his personal and professional life over the past two years, primarily aimed at providing a better environment for his children’s growth.

After relocating, Djokovic actively integrated into the local community and participated in several sports events in Athens. In November 2025, he took part in the inaugural Greek Open (ATP250), organized by his family and directed by his brother Djordje. This tournament replaced the Serbia Open previously held in Belgrade and became a significant professional event for him after his move.
