"Today was a tough game for me and I knew before the fight was not going to be easy, but I'm happy with my performance today." In her post-match interview on the court, Gauff said she would face Burrech in the second round.

Sinner

In Rod Laver's second match, world No.1 Sinner defeated Chilean sensation Jarry 7-6(2)/7-6(5)/6-1 to secure his first title defence, making it 15 wins in a row on New Year's Eve and 15 in a hard court Grand Slam.

Mickelson

In the two singles matchups at John Cain Stadium, 11th seed and former tournament runner-up Tsitsipas lost 5-7/3-6/6-2/4-6 to American teenager Mickelson, becoming the first men's singles seed to go out of the Australian Open after seven years.
