ATP announces the tenth Masters event; Medvedev and the American No.2 exit, Rublev secures a spot, and Kvitova is expecting a baby

Three minutes daily to catch up on all tennis news. Hello tennis fans, today is Friday, October 24, 2025. Welcome to the midday news report brought to you by "Tennis Home."

Early this morning Beijing time, the ATP declared that a tenth ATP1000 Masters event will be added in 2028, hosted by Saudi Arabia. Reportedly, this new tournament is a collaboration between the ATP and Surj Sports Investment, a company under PIF, marking a new chapter for tennis in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and ushering in a new era for global tennis.

ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi stated, “This is a proud moment for us and the result of years of hard work. Saudi Arabia has demonstrated a genuine commitment to tennis—not only at the professional level but also in promoting the sport more broadly across all levels. PIF’s ambitions for tennis are very clear, and we believe fans and players alike will be pleasantly surprised by what’s coming.”

Back to the courts. Last night Beijing time, the second round of singles concluded at two ATP500 indoor hardcourt tournaments this week, with all quarterfinalists decided. In Vienna, top seed Jannik Sinner defeated compatriot Sebastian Korda 6-2, 7-6(4) to reach the quarterfinals, where he will face Kazakhstan’s Bublik for the fourth time this season; Bublik had beaten Argentine F. Cerundolo 6-4, 6-2. Sixth seed and Russian star Daniil Medvedev was eliminated by Frenchman Ugo Humbert 7-6(3), 6-4, missing out on the quarters.

Italian star Matteo Berrettini battled through a tough match to defeat British player Cameron Norrie 7-6(6), 6-7(9), 6-4, securing a quarterfinal spot. German Alexander Zverev and Italian Lorenzo Musetti also won their matches to advance.

In Basel, the tournament’s top two seeds, American No.1 Taylor Fritz and No.2 Tommy Paul, both lost and failed to reach the quarterfinals. Fritz was defeated by Frenchman Ugo Humbert 6-3, 6-4, while Paul lost 3-6, 4-6 to Spain’s Munar. Norway’s Casper Ruud and Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime beat local veteran Stan Wawrinka (40) and Croatian veteran Marin Cilic (37) respectively to join the quarterfinals. The remaining two quarterfinal spots went to Denis Shapovalov and Reilly Opelka.

Turning to the women’s tour. Yesterday Beijing time, the WTA250 Guangzhou International Women’s Tennis Open completed its second round of singles, finalizing the quarterfinal lineup. Two-time champion and Chinese veteran Zhang Shuai came back from behind to beat Slovenian Kaja Juvan 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, securing a place in the quarters. She will next face American Whitney Osuigwe.

Meanwhile, Chinese players Wang Xiyu and Wang Yafan were defeated by Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti and New Zealand’s Erin Routliffe, respectively, missing out on advancing. Other quarterfinalists include Ann Li, Seidel, McNally, and Liu Jingwen.

At the WTA500 Tokyo event, in this morning’s singles quarterfinals, Czech rising star Karolina Muchova advanced to the semifinals after her opponent, Karolina Kalinskaya, retired while trailing 6-0, 1-0.

In a highlight match concluded at midday, Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina defeated Canadian rising star Leylah Fernandez 6-3, 7-6 to reach the semifinals. This victory pushed her ahead of Russian young star Mira Andreeva in the race for the final singles spot at the year-end championships.

In player news, last night Beijing time, two-time Grand Slam champion and Czech star Petra Kvitova announced on her personal social media that she and her husband are expecting their second child. Kvitova is having another baby!

Finally, let’s guess and recognize. The image below shows a player on vacation. Without any hints, can you identify who she is?

In the previous guessing game, tennis fan "QueenHuyana" from Zhejiang provided the correct answer. That’s right, the person in the picture is the Philippines’ top female player, Alex Eala.
