On October 9th, Beijing time, the 2025 Wuhan Open completed its fourth day of main draw competition, setting the singles and doubles quarterfinalists. Chinese player Zhang Shuai, featured in the night session, lost 3-6, 2-6 to the third seed Gauff, regrettably exiting at the round of 16 and finishing her participation in this edition of the Wuhan Open.

Gauff and Zhang Shuai
Zhang Shuai showed strong form in this Wuhan Open, having battled through tough three-set matches in the first two rounds to eliminate 14th seed Navarro and Kostyia. Facing last year’s semifinalist Gauff this round, she still delivered a solid performance. Although she missed three consecutive break points early on and was broken, Zhang quickly broke back. However, Gauff raised her level afterward and took the first set 6-3. In the second set, after a 2-2 tie, Gauff won four straight games to close out the match 6-2 and secure victory.

Gauff

Sigmund
In the quarterfinals, Gauff will compete against Sigmund for a semifinal spot. Sigmund overcame a 2-5 deficit in the second set to defeat Frech 6-4, 7-6(2), reaching the WTA1000 singles quarterfinals for the first time in her career. Having also qualified for the doubles quarterfinals, Sigmund has spent over 10 hours on court this week after tough three-set wins against Yastremska and fifth seed Andreyeva in earlier rounds.

Sabalenka

Rybakina
Three-time champion Sabalenka, after a narrow escape yesterday, showed improved form this round, defeating 16th seed Samsonova 6-3, 6-2 in just 75 minutes to extend her Wuhan Open singles winning streak to 19 matches and advance confidently into the quarterfinals. In the quarters, Sabalenka will face Rybakina in the 13th “Double B Battle.” Rybakina won today’s match in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 against this year’s China Open singles runner-up Noskova, reaching the Wuhan Open singles quarterfinals again after six years.

Swiatek

Paolini
In two other third-round matches in the bottom half, top-eight seeds Swiatek and Paolini both advanced to the quarterfinals. Swiatek faced some challenges in the night session but eventually defeated 13th seed Bencic 7-6(2), 6-4, marking her 25th career appearance in a WTA1000 quarterfinal. Paolini benefited from her opponent Tauson’s retirement when leading 3-6, 6-1, 3-1, earning her 40th WTA main draw singles win this season, matching her personal best for a single season and making it two consecutive years reaching the Wuhan Open quarterfinals.

Pegula

Siniakova
Sixth seed Pegula engaged in a tough battle with ninth seed Aleksandrova, eventually prevailing 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 after 2 hours and 6 minutes. Having faced grueling matches in consecutive rounds at this Wuhan Open, Pegula said after the match, “I’m really happy to have won today. Matches against her are always challenging, but I controlled the match and am very pleased with the victory.” In the quarterfinals, Pegula will face qualifier Siniakova, who defeated lucky loser Jovic 7-5, 6-3 to advance.

Yuan Yue / Andreescu
In doubles, wildcard entrants Yuan Yue and Andreescu advanced with a lucky break as top seeds Paolini and Errani withdrew. In other matches, Sigmund and Stolar defeated fourth seeds Andreyeva and Schneider 6-4, 6-4, while Noskova and Shramkova overturned Fernandez and Luttrief 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 to reach the quarterfinals.
Schedule for Day 5

The schedule for October 10th is set, with four women’s singles quarterfinal matches to be played sequentially on the center court, determining the semifinalists. Additionally, Yuan Yue and Andreescu will play the final doubles quarterfinal match on center court, while the remaining doubles matches will take place on Court 1.
