Federer’s agent reveals the latest update on exhibition matches: ongoing discussions with Nadal’s team

Federer’s agent, Tony Godsick, recently disclosed that Nadal and the Swiss legend might reunite on the tennis court.

“I’ve been encouraging him a bit, saying, ‘Please, everyone wants to watch you play again. You could join some senior matches.’ We’ve also discussed with Rafa about potentially putting together a small tour. Roger just wants to make sure his knee is fine; he doesn’t want to completely break down after retirement, so he’s allowing himself some recovery time. He isn’t ready yet, but he’s training a lot in the gym right now.”

Godsick added that Nadal is likely to accept this opportunity, which would also give other retired players from their generation a chance to play. “I think Rafa is interested. Of course, I can’t speak for him, but it would be great to see them back on court again. There are many retired players from their generation, and I believe they would be willing to participate as well. It would be a lot of fun. There are many big names among the recently retired players. We could easily fill large stadiums and arenas.”

Previously, Federer and Nadal officially retired in September 2022 and November 2024, respectively. Their rivalry spanned the 2000s and 2010s, with 40 matches played between them. During the Laver Cup, Federer’s agent spoke about the current situation, stating that although the former world No.1 has some motivation to join legends events, he still does not want to risk injury.

Federer expressed his anticipation of reuniting with his old rival Nadal. Before the start of the 2025 Laver Cup, he told CNBC in an interview that he and Nadal could lead a series of exhibition matches for retired players.

Federer’s idea excited fans greatly: “Why not? I really like Rafa. A few days ago, I played tennis for four hours in San Francisco and another hour and a half in Los Angeles. Before that, I was playing regularly, so I’ve been working hard to stay in shape. I know Rafa is definitely willing to play some more. Maybe we could create a tour, like a ‘Fedal Tour’ or something. I think that would be really cool.”

Earlier, Federer collaborated with Team8 to conceive and launch the Laver Cup event. At the inaugural tournament in 2017, he partnered with Nadal to inspire the next generation of players, including Miesnik. In 2022, these two stars concluded their appearances in this annual team event, with Federer playing his final professional match.

Godsick said, “Since Federer retired, he no longer has the excuse of saying, ‘Don’t bother me if I’m training or playing.’ Now that he’s neither training nor competing, he actually has more time to create and think. His collaboration with On is fantastic; it only takes 27 minutes from his home to the office. So the shoes you see are actually designed by Roger himself together with the team.”

Regarding Federer’s continued deep involvement in Laver Cup preparations, he added: “He’s looking for the next direction. We’re exploring what else can be done. Meanwhile, he’s very committed to the Laver Cup. Every Monday, he comes with a small notebook filled with about 25 points on what we do well, what can be improved, and some new ideas.”

The 8th Laver Cup has started amid intense competition, with Europe winning both matches on the opening day. In the evening session, Cobolli will represent Europe against Fonseca from the World Team, which is aiming for their third Laver Cup title.(Source: Tennis Home, Author: Spark)
