When it comes to Swiss men's tennis, many fans immediately think of Federer. Indeed, this player won 103 titles during his career and was the first 1980s-born player to complete a career Grand Slam. However, because Federer was so dominant, many fans have forgotten the names of other Swiss male players, including Wawrinka, who has won three Grand Slam titles.
After Federer's retirement, although Hussler once won a tour title and Stricker reached the round of 16 in a Grand Slam, time has passed and both players have now fallen outside the top 200 in world rankings; meanwhile, due to aging, Wawrinka's ranking has slipped beyond the top 140. It seemed Swiss men's tennis was fading away. However, recently at the US Open, a young Swiss player achieved six consecutive wins, bringing hope back to Swiss men's tennis. So, who is this rising Swiss star? Let this article take you through it.
This young Swiss player is Ledi. In 2020, he won the Australian Open junior boys' doubles title; in 2022, Ledi claimed his first Challenger title. That year, he improved his world ranking by nearly 500 places, attracting attention from some fans.
Since then, Ledi has made steady progress every year. However, before the 2025 US Open season, his results were not very encouraging. Until August, Ledi had not won any matches in the 2025 tour season. Because of this, many fans were discussing his performance critically.
At the end of August, Ledi appeared in the US Open qualifiers alongside compatriots Kim and Hussler. All three players won two matches each, advancing to the final round of US Open qualifying. Unfortunately, Hussler was swept aside by American player Schweida in that round. But Ledi and Kim both defeated their opponents and made it into the main draw of the US Open for the first time in their careers.
In the first round, Kim defeated American player Quinn, securing his first Grand Slam main draw victory. Encouraged by Kim, Ledi convincingly beat Spanish player Pe-Martinez to also advance smoothly. In the second round, despite losing the first set, Kim fought through five sets to overcome American player Brandon Nakashima, who had once reached a Grand Slam round of 16, marking Kim’s first time reaching the last 32 of a Grand Slam. Meanwhile, Ledi also came from behind to defeat Argentine player F. Cerundolo, achieving a new career breakthrough.
In the third round, Kim gave his all but still lost to American player Fritz, a former Masters champion, ending his run. Ledi, however, reached match point in the first set when Polish player Majchrzak had to retire due to health reasons. Thus, Ledi advanced to his first Grand Slam round of 16, which was only his second time coming through Grand Slam qualifying.
Although Ledi was soundly defeated in the quarterfinals by Australian player Deminer, who had previously reached a Masters final, he still deserves praise. Moreover, the performances of Ledi and Kim at the US Open have impressed many fans, giving them hope for the future of Swiss men's tennis.
