This is the first occasion in 21 years that an Indonesian tennis player has appeared in a Grand Slam event.
Janice Tjen, an Indonesian tennis player, secured her spot in the main draw of the final Grand Slam of the year, the 2025 US Open, after an impressive 6-1, 6-2 victory over Aoi Ito last night (August 22) Vietnam time.
Possessing a playing style quite similar to Ito’s — consistent rallies, very low and sharp slices exploiting the opponent’s weaknesses — Tjen, however, has a stronger serve and more powerful shots than the Japanese player, which helped her achieve a more comfortable win than expected.
With a high-quality serve, Tjen easily scored points while continuously pressuring Ito during return games, earning three break points in the first set to claim a commanding 6-1 win. In the second set, Ito served better, but facing a very solid Tjen, the Japanese player couldn’t capitalize on any mistakes and even lost two service games, ultimately conceding defeat after just 50 minutes of play.
This victory makes Janice Tjen the first Indonesian player to appear in a Grand Slam in 21 years. The last representative from the "Land of a Thousand Islands" to compete in a Major was Angelique Widjaja at the 2004 US Open.
The 2025 US Open is also a rare Grand Slam featuring two Southeast Asian players competing in singles: Janice Tjen from Indonesia and Alexandra Eala, a young star from the Philippines.
Additionally, another Southeast Asian player expected to compete in this year’s final Grand Slam is Aldila Sutjiadi, Tjen’s compatriot, currently ranked in the world’s top 50 in doubles.
Born in 2002 in Jakarta, Indonesia, Janice Tjen turned professional in 2018 and made a mark three years later by winning a bronze medal in women’s doubles (partnering with Aldila Sutjiadi) at the 19th ASIAD. At one point unranked globally due to studying and playing for the Pepperdine University tennis team — the Pepperdine Waves — Tjen had an impressive 2025 season with a long winning streak on the ITF World Tennis Tour, capturing 6 titles in 9 finals.
Her strong performance on the ITF circuit propelled Tjen up the world rankings (currently at 147), earning her a place in the 2025 US Open qualifiers. The 23-year-old shone with three consecutive wins over the 22nd seed Varvara Lepchenko, Maja Chwalinska, and most recently the 3rd seed Aoi Ito, marking a historic milestone for Indonesian tennis.
