Coach Mai Đức Chung: 'I am delighted with this victory'

Coach Mai Đức Chung gave Huỳnh Như plenty of compliments, while also sharing his joy at the 3-1 triumph over Thailand’s women’s squad.

By defeating the Thailand women’s team 3-1, the Vietnamese women’s national team officially secured third place at the 2025 Southeast Asian Women’s Football Championship. Notably, captain and striker Huỳnh Như scored a goal in this match.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Coach Mai Đức Chung immediately commended Vietnam’s number 9:

"I’m happy for Huỳnh Như scoring her goal today. As I’ve mentioned before, Như remains a vital player for the whole team. Even when she doesn’t find the net, she still delivers excellent passes."

Discussing this victory further, Mr. Chung stated: "I am thrilled with this win and would like to thank the Hai Phong supporters and fans across the country for their encouragement and energy, which inspired our team to perform so well today. This is the second time we have beaten Thailand at this tournament. We dedicate today’s victory to all our fans, celebrating the anniversaries of August 19 and September 2."

After the 2025 ASEAN Cup, Coach Mai Đức Chung and his team will prepare for the 33rd SEA Games, set to take place in Thailand in December. Assessing his squad’s chances of winning gold, the 76-year-old coach was cautious:

"It’s not that I don’t want to rejuvenate the squad. I really wanted to bring up some U20 players for this tournament, but since the Vietnam U20 women’s team also had commitments at the same time, I couldn’t disrupt their lineup."

Trần Thị Duyên (15) has been a regular on the field throughout this year’s tournament.

"Myanmar is truly the tournament’s wildcard; if Vietnam had been in the same group, I’m not sure what would have happened. Still, I must say our loss to Australia’s U23 was just an accident, as our players gave it their all," Coach Mai Đức Chung praised the Myanmar women’s team and also recalled the defeat to Australia.
